This tutorial is for the beginners out there. Lighting is tricky. It's not always the most obvious thing to get right, and lighting in Unreal poses its own share of challenges on top of that. That's where this video comes in, where we'll learn all about the very fundamentals of light, what kind of lights are available to us, how they work, how to make of the most of them, followed by a deep explanation of how light behaves in the real world, and mimicking that in Unreal. Then we'll learn how to light an environment from total scratch, twice. Once for a daytime lighting, and a second time for an overcast, dark, moody day look.
Fasten your seatbelt because this is a long one!

FAQ:
Q: Question
A: Answer
Q: I switch to a different Map and Nuke just hangs for a long time, and then finally renders an image
A: This could be because the shaders are still building in the map you’re trying to access from the UE project. If this is the case, switch to UE and you’ll likely see the Movie Render Queue rendering window showing a message along the lines of “building shaders”.
Q: Some elements in my render (like smoke and sparks) look different to what is shown in UE’s viewport, and also change if I alter a UnrealReader setting on the same frame?
A: Some of the physics/emitters in UE are non-deterministic (and may not have an option to be made deterministic), so individual renders from UnrealReader may not match. This can also apply to motion blur, or any post process items that use temporal / spatial samples.
When using the UnrealReader node Write section render option to render the whole Sequence out to EXRs, the problem should not exist and the elements should be temporally correct.
Q: I’ve created a new Camera in a level sequence using either the + Track button / right-click-on-left-area-of-panel - Actor to Sequencer, but in Nuke the UnrealReader doesn’t seem to render the correct thing, and the Camera tab shows 0,0,0 for the transform and rotation data (with no animation)?
A: This is likely caused by a UE Level Sequence issue whereby adding a camera using this method to an existing Camera Cuts track will not bind the camera to that Camera Cuts track, even if the name of the camera is the same as the one you had before (and perhaps deleted).
You need to click on the Camera Cuts + Camera button and rebind the camera you’ve just added.
If there is no Camera Cut track to start with, then UE will do it correctly and bind it on creation, so there won’t be any issues as mentioned above
Q: When I add a UnrealReader node initially it hangs Nuke for about a minute, then finally connects (beach ball on Mac, blue spinner on Windows)
A: This can be one of two things. From experience when this has occurred, it tends to be that the port number being used has had some form of issue. First try changing to a new port in both Nuke and Unreal. If a new port fails, restart your computer to try and clean up the ports.
It can also be due to the number of Maps/Sequences in a UE project being very large, which can mean a lot of data to read. We have seen this in the Matrix City scene released with UE5.

With UE5 Officially released, it's safe to say that more and more productions will be moving from UE4, and onto this new platform. But what is the future of UE5? Who will be using it? And why? Is it the solution we've been looking for?

If the OCIO options aren't showing up for you in MRQ, make sure you have the OpenColorIO plugin enabled!
My understanding is that while Unreal is in linear sRGB, the viewport has an ACES filmic tonemapper applied, giving us the substantial benefits of the ACES tone curve, filmic highlight rolloffs, etc.
However, the ACES colorspace for post-production work is intended to be linear. What we get out of #UnrealEngine with default render settings isn't in linear, the tonemapper remaps those linear values to the 0-1 range. The OCIO config disables that tonemapper at render time. Which is why we jump through all the hoops in this video to render in linear.
I get a lot of questions about how to get my renders from Unreal Engine, and into Davinci Resolve for grading. There's a lot of mixed opinions and thoughts on the matter out there, but this here is what I've found to be the easiest and most straightforward approach.

Lighting night time scenes is tricky, but fortunately, with the help of decades of cinematography tricks to work with, we can break down how movies are lit, and apply those tricks to our own 3D environments. The fundamentals are the same, so it doesn't really matter which renderer you're using. I want to clarify that there are HUNDREDS of ways to light things, and this is only one way to do that. Feel free to share your own approach in the comments!
You'll soon realize that moonlight is a fickle beast, but it can be tamed, and faking it, tricking the audience into believing something through good lighting is key.

After 14 years as a 3D Artist, people ask me all the time what the best way to improve their 3D Art is. Practice makes perfect they say. But a break away from the computer helps you just as much. What you do when you are away from your desk helps you even more. That's where photography comes in. Photography literally changed my life as a 3D Artist. This will make you a better artist. Whether you are working in Unreal, Blender, 3DS Max, whatever, this WILL help you grow.

This video contains a whole bunch of important information that WILL AFFECT how you create content for UE5 using Lumen. I cannot stress enough how necessary the information here is. I know this video may seem a bit dry but it WILL improve your lighting quality. For the record, the contents of this video apply to Unreal Engine 5 EARLY ACCESS. And things will likely change in future builds, once 5.0 is officially released.

In this video we cover how to fix a variety of common foliage issues in Unreal Engine. It's a rather frustrating process to diagnose when these problems rear their ugly head, fortunately, the problems are rather easily fixable.

In this tutorial we talk about Nvidia's RTXGI plugin. This is a relatively new lighting method that completely leapfrogs the default Raytraced Global Illumination options in UE4 / Unreal Engine 4. While Unreal Engine 5 has Lumen, RTXGI is a worthy competitor. In this video we cover how to set up the plugin, how to use RTXGI, how it works, as well as a few other quality of life settings that are really good to know about.
You DON'T need an RTX gpu for this to work. But it should go without saying that you need to enable raytracing in your project settings for this to work.

This tutorial covers how to set up and use a procedural camera shake blueprint in just minutes in Unreal Engine. This applies to both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5!
Shaky Cam is one of those things that are either extremely desireable, or absolutely awful. You could always keyframe the camera shake yourself, but having a procedural, additive approach is way easier to set up.
This tutorial was made in Unreal Engine 4.27, but can be done in earlier versions of Unreal (4.25, 4.26) by using the Matinee Shake I show in this tutorial. The same should apply to UE5.

I thought Raytraced Translucency was broken in the 4.27 preview update, but after talking to the devs at Epic Games, I found out that they revamped the way that Raytraced Glass Materials are configured. Now we actually control refraction with the refraction pin, as opposed to with the specular pin.
Thanks, Devs!

Lumen is a brand new feature that was made available in Unreal Engine 5 as of May 26th. As we all know, UE5 came out of the blue, and with it, a plethora of new tools! This tutorial covers how to use Lumen, how to fix common issues, and limitations of Lumen.
We talk about how to fix noisy shadows, GI issues, and console commands.
Yeah. Console commands are still here. Yay.
