`Something fascinating we saw in The Last Airbender was not only Sokka studying under a fire nation sword master named Piandao, but we also see that Zuko, under his mysterious blue spirit identity, is also capable of some excellent swordfighting skills. Fans have long speculated on how exactly Zuko learned these skills, leaving us with the question, who was Zuko’s sword master?
Well, in the Lost Adventures comic series, we actually get to see Zuko and Sokka have a “swordbending” agni kai. Despite his intense training and the fact he’s meant to be a powerful non-bender, Sokka gets absolutely whooped by Zuko several times, who doesn’t go easy on him at all. Prior to this humiliating defeat, Zuko warns Sokka that he trained with master Piandao as a kid and that he wouldn’t lose.
It’s actually quite wholesome to see how cocky and proud Zuko is, since as he grew up in the fire nation, he was always second to his sister and was always seen as inferior and a failure. From his time with the gaang, he’s able to find things to be proud of and experience regular human emotions like pride and joy. Just a little thing to think about, and it’s a really awesome comic.
Master Piandao was the son of two firebenders, both being talented and respected people in their powers and abilities. Feeling deep shame that their sole descendent wasn’t a bender, they abandoned him at the path to an orphanage and that’s where he’d grow up, very anxious and shy due to his abandonment.
