Recently, a viewer asked about the mysterious figure of Moses’s wife Zipporah. If people know about her at all, they remember the story about God coming one dark night to kill Moses, so Zipporah quickly circumcises their son and calls Moses her bridegroom of blood. It’s a strange, eerie, almost macabre tale, that we don’t much know what to do with.
So, I started gathering scholarly papers, looking in commentaries, investigating the original Hebrew text, cross-referencing the ancient Greek translation called the Septuagint and, well, this is quite a story! One of the most mysterious, for theologians and commentators alike.
Let’s explore it together.
I Shepherdess, Exodus 2:11–22'
God’s call often comes unexpectedly and always means change
II Circumcizer, Exodus 4:18–26
God created woman as ezer kenegdo, powerful counterpart to man
III Prophetic Symbol
God’s impartial judgment responds with mercy
IV Epilogue, Exodus 18
God’s design for humanity requires shared community
Each video is designed to offer background scholarship on the topic, including setting, culture, original language, and archaeology, as well as a theological study.
The "Broken, Searching, Trusted, Powerful" series is a companion to the book, available on Amazon, and published by Wipf and Stock.
