One of the most influential Chinese contemporary artists today, Zhang Huan is well known for his performance art, but he also makes photography and sculptures.
After returning to China from New York and converting to Buddhism, he took up sculpture. He was deeply inspired by fragmented parts of the Buddha, and first worked on magnified sculptures of giant copper hands and feet.
Here at Asia Society Hong Kong Center, we have Zhang Huan's Long Island Buddha sculpture. Made of copper and steel, the giant Buddha head lies slanted against a backdrop of lush trees, overlooking the serene Joseph Lau and Josephine Lau Roof Garden.
As one of the biggest pieces of outdoor artworks we have, it definitely captivates visitors and leaves them in awe of its magnitude. While the sculpture can certainly be viewed from far away due to its size, you can also try to inch closer and observe the details -- its rough surface and welded joints make it vastly different from the usual Buddha statues that we see!
Since the inauguration of the sculpture, the Long Island Buddha has been a permanent feature of our site for more than 10 years, through rain and shine!
