The two actors first met when they were both 19 years old, on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016. Zendaya, who played MJ in the film and rapidly became one of the media's new favorite Marvel characters for her wit and sass, couldn't help but build a bond with Tom Holland, who played Peter Parker, at first as friends and eventually as something more. They grew closer and even appeared in one other's Instagram photos, with the first appearance in Tom's post titled "Summer Sunday's" in July 2016, but the post was clearly platonic, especially with their other friend in the pool. "They started seeing one other while they were filming Spider-Man," a source told PEOPLE in 2017, "They've been incredibly careful to keep it quiet and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with each other." When the fans found out, they wasted no time in coining the term "Tomdaya," and it didn't take long for the fans to believe the false reports because Tom and Zendaya were the type to keep their connection hidden. However, they both promptly debunked the allegations on Twitter, and Zendaya even joked about it when she tweeted, "Wait wait... My favorite part is when it says, "We go on trips together!" I haven't taken a vacation in a long time! *Laughing emojis” and she even added “hbu” and tagged co-star Tom Holland, in which he replied “Does the press tour count”.
