So Sheik’s theme has been on my to-do list for a looong time. It’s my favorite piece of music from Ocarina of Time. There are a lot of reasons why, but one of the main ones is just how perfectly it fits the character. There’s a sort of mystic, yet reassuring quality to it. Kind of hard to explain, but you know exactly what I mean if you’ve played the game.

Arranging this was a challenge and it went through a bunch of iterations before I settled on this one. I was going to follow the original much more closely, but I eventually came up with the guitar riff you hear in the video and decided to go with that. The original is a really bizarre piece of music if you listen closely. It doesn’t really follow any sort of tempo and it’s in the key of A, but I don’t think an A chord is played in the whole thing. I tried to tame it without dulling it down too much.

Writing the lyrics was also a great challenge. This game, in particular, and these characters mean a great deal to a lot people (myself included) so one has to be delicate when creating lyrics that involve them. It was daunting because it’s been done so many times and I didn’t want to just rewrite the same thing.

I noticed that the majority of lyrics written for this song are written from Sheik’s perspective as if she’s speaking to Link, offering her wisdom, guidance and reassurance. So I thought it would be interesting to write them from Link’s perspective as a sort of character analysis of Sheik. The way he sees her. Yes, she’s a strong-willed character, but if you take a closer look, you start to consider everything that led up to her and Link meeting for the first time since they were kids. A lifetime of suffering, fear and aguish crammed into seven years, which was not more than a blink of an eye from Link’s point of view. That’s what was going through my head while writing this.

I tried a different filming style for this one. I recorded the song then filmed myself playing to it afterwards. It got slightly out of sync a couple of times, but I thought it turned out okay. What do you think? Also picked up a new lens for my T3i which made my footage look a little better.

Anyways, thanks for watching, everyone. I put a lot of effort into this one so I hope you dig it. I’ll see you soon!

LYRICS

Seven years gone in a day
Every one etched in your gaze

Withered crimson eyes behind a golden veil
Cast aside what's made them cry for I won't fail
Remember those song of old, ancient tales

Like a jewel tossed in the fray
Just a child lost on her way

Ease your woes, don't flee from those who've caused you pain
For they chose to be the foes of Evil's Bane
and like the day, washed away with the rain
