Hey, it's another Zelda cover!
Link's Awakening is one of my favorite Zelda games. Probably #3 or #4 depending on what day it is. The concept of Koholint Island being a fleeting dream that feels so real has always resonated with me. Not nearly as dark as Majora's Mask, but still a somber concept nonetheless.
I've wanted to cover this particular piece for a while now. It's one of my favorites from the game for its haunting countenance. I decided to record multiple guitar tracks and splice them all together to give it a legato sound. I wanted to preserve the dissonance in the notes and it would have been lost if I'd just picked the melody in one straight shot. I had to move the capo around a lot to achieve this affect and that's why there are a ton of cuts in the guitar frame (it's kind of funny watching the capo jump around in all the different shots). As a result, it ended up being a lot of work. Not anywhere near as bad as Ripple Field though, haha.
ALSO, I couldn't find any damned save states for the Super Game Boy version of Link's Awakening DX so I was up until 3 AM last night capturing game footage! I had to play through about 75% of the game to get to the Face Shrine. Weeee!
I debated with myself whether or not to add more instruments to the song. At one point I was considering drums and distorted guitars, because I think it would work really well as a heavier song. Ultimately, I chose to keep it simple and faithful to the original by making it an ambient track. I might do a remix-remix one day.
I've got one more Zelda cover planned for this month. It's a cover with lyrics from what may be my favorite game in the series. If everything goes to plan I should have it out near the end of next week!
