Digital Friendship: A Video Essay Mary McGillivray 2015-11-02 | This film explores online relationships, using my YouTube friendship with Mirel Gonzalez (who lives in Puerto Rico) as an example of the many benefits and difficulties of building a friendship through YouTube. The film is divided into six parts. The first part introduces who we are and how Mirel and I met, and discusses how online friendships are formed. The second part explores privacy on YouTube, and asks how we can maintain a personal relationship without disclosing too much online to our public audience. In part three I discuss the nature of self-editing and how YouTube, as a public and visual-based platform, can limit our communication. Part four explores how YouTube friendships give unique insights into another person’s culture and life. In this section I also discuss how other social media platforms are needed to sustain an online friendship, due to certain limitations of YouTube communication. Part five dives into YouTube celebrity culture and compares amateur video bloggers with internet stars like Shane Dawson and Jenna Marbles.
