------------------------
H.: "Well, Mr. Capablanca, what do you think of the Euwe-Aljechin-match?"
C.: "Dr. Alekhine's game is 20% bluff. Dr. Euwe's game is clear and straightforward. Dr. Euwe's game – not so strong as Aljechin's in some respects – is more evenly balanced."

"3. 7 Tie-breaks
3.7.1.a If the scores are level after the regular twelve (12) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move
3.7.1.b All tie-break games shall be played according to the following:
1. Play is governed by the World Championship Technical Regulations (annex 1), which apply with the exceptions mentioned below in (2), (3) and (4).
2. The players do not need to record the moves. An arbiter shall record the moves.
3. The player who has the move may stop the clocks and consult the Arbiter’s score sheet and if his next move will produce a threefold repetition of position (according to Article 9.2a of the Technical Regulations), or the 50 moves rule (according to Article 9.3a of the Technical Regulations), he himself must write the intended move on the score sheet and claim the draw if he wants. A player can also claim a draw according to Articles 9.2b and 9.3b of the Technical Regulations. If the claim is found to be correct, the game is immediately ended as a draw. If the claim is found to be incorrect, the Arbiter shall add two (2) minutes to the opponent’s remaining time and the game continues with the intended move, in accordance with Article 4 of the Technical Regulations. A maximum of two (2) incorrect claims for a draw can be made by each player. If a player makes a third (3rd ) incorrect claim, the arbiter shall declare the game lost for this player.
4. If a game has ended by resignation, checkmate, time loss, stalemate, triple repetition or any other of the ways described in Article 5 of the Technical Regulations, no claim for irregularities shall be accepted (irregularities include clock settings and all other described in Article 7 of the Technical Regulations).
3.7.2 If the scores are level after the games in Article 3.7.1a, then, after a new drawing of colors, a match of 2 games shall be played with a time control of 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment after each move. In case of a level score, another 2-game match will be played to determine a winner. If still there is no winner after 5 such matches (total 10 games), one sudden-death game will be played as described below in Article 3.7.3.
3.7.2.b For the blitz games of article 3.7.2, the penalties mentioned in Articles 7 and 9 of the Annex 1 “World Championship Technical Regulations” shall be one (1) minute instead of two (2) minutes.
3.7.3 If the score is still level after five matches as described in Article 3.7.2, the players shall play a one sudden death game. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.
3.7.4 There shall be a pause of 10 minutes between all tie-break games, unless the Chief Arbiter decides otherwise."

Gleichzeitig gerieten beide Spieler zunehmend in Zeitnot.
Stand: 3,5:3,5
Also steht es nun 3:3.
*Partiebeginn (algebraische Notation)
Karjakin - Carlsen
1.e2-e4 e7-e5
2.Sg1-f3 Sb8-c6
3.Lf1-b5 (definiert die Spanische Partie)
3... a7-a6 (wurde früher als Morphy-Verteidigung bezeichnet)
4.Lb5-a4 Sg8-f6
5.0-0 Lf8-e7
6.Tf1-e1 b7-b5
7.La4-b3 0-0 (deutet den Marshall-Angriff an)
7.h2-h3 (EIN Anti-Marshall-System, abgelehnter Marshall-Angriff)
7... Lc8-b7
8.d2-d3 d7-d5 (eine Gambitfortsetzung)
9.e4xd5 Sf6xd5
Der Satz des Abends war sicherlich "Make the Trompowski great again!" (Eröffnungscode D00, Trompowski-System)
Die nächste Runde findet am 12.11. um 20.00 statt.
Bedenkzeit-Regeln der FIDE für dieses Match:
"3.5 Time control.
3.5.1 The time control for each game shall be: 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 1."
(Das gilt nicht für den Tie-Break.)

SACEUR: Supreme Allied Commander Europe
USEUCOM: United States European Command (Sitz in Stuttgart)
Dialog im Originalwortlaut:
"(Martinez de Rituerto from) El País, Spain. When you say that the broad sharing of the responsibilities dealing with nuclear weapons, that means that all the allies that now have weapons in their soil in Europe have to keep them in order to share the responsibilities? Thank you!
Well, that's, of course, part of our discussion from now until November. The important thing is that all allies agree that no one will take unilateral steps. We will move together. We will keep alliance unity. That's the most important thing. Within that framework, of course, we can have and will have an open discussion how can we make our deterrence policy as credible and as efficient as possible.
But I was very pleased that we got reaffirmed that no unilateral steps or decisions will be taken. We will move together. As an alliance based on solidarity."

It took about eight minutes for the machine to come up with a move by printing the new position after any move onto a continuous form paper.
Prior to this game, a program called "MADAM" by Alan Turing allegedly played games but usually lost very quickly after horrible blunders.
According to "Thinking Machines" (1959), the machine was not working on full brute force mode but also performed a prescreening process.
Interestingly, the machine was also able to resign.
BTW, the Soviets were also working on that AI issue and used a big iron called BESM.

Scientific American (Paper): "Computer v. Chess-Player" by A. Bernstein and Michael de V. Roberts, 1958
The short intro was captured from the clip "Thinking Machines".
Game was played in September 1952 in Manchester, UK. It was however not the first game of a program ever played since prior to this event, Turochamp played a game against Wilhelmina Barbara Maria Dullaert, the wife of Prof. David Gawen Champernowne(1912-2000). She was a chess beginner and lost the game.
The chess algorithm was developed starting from 1948. Alan Turing however did not finish to make Turochamp run on an engine although he tried for the world's first commercially available general-purpose electronic computer, the Ferranti Mark 1 (delivered from 1951 on).
Some say that Turochamp was more an algorithm rather than a code and Champernowne stated:
"Most of our attention went to deciding which moves were to be followed up. My memory about this is infuriatingly weak, Captures had to be followed up at least to the point where no further captures was immediately possible. Check and forcing moves had to be followed further. We were particularly keen on the idea that whereas certain moves would be scorned as pointless and pursued no further others would be followed quite a long way down certain paths. In the actual experiment I suspect we were a bit slapdash about all this and must have made a number of slips since the arithmetic was extremely tedious with pencil and paper. Our general conclusion was that a computer should be fairly easy to programme to play a game of chess against a beginner and stand a fair chance of winning or least reaching a winning position."
The first chess game played by a computer program on an 8x8 board was carried out in 1958. It is also stated that in the 1940s, Konrad Zuse developed a chess program but honestly I have doubts that he succeeded. it is sure however, that Zuse gave it try.

Nebenbei:
Message: "For a happy future - see your WAR BOND OFFICER Today!"
Together with a ridiculous Japanese fellow called Sad Sack who is talking like Porky Pig representing a wannabe US prisoner of war emphasizing on the great advantages of living in Japan, Tokyo Rose* begins broadcasting anti-American propaganda. Her question "What good will bonds do?" refers to so-called Defense Bonds and since the Pearl Harbor attack in Dec. 1941, they were renamed to US War Bonds. Those IOUs were intended to finance the US war machine and promoted in huge campaigns including by celebs like Bette Davies and many others.
Seaman Mr. Hook looking like Porky Pig is representing 'Uncle Sam's navy' ("Whose intentions are really quite clean. They are sending you more of these presents, again and again and again.") shoots a bullet followed by several bombs at Rose and her fellows (presumably referring to area bombing of Tokyo and not to the atomic blasts in Hiroshima & Nagasaki). The War Bonds were promoted as mandatory financial instruments to defeat Japan but also pushed as a fine rewarding investment for a bright wealthy future.
Presumably due to time pressure and to lower costs, this short film came in black-and-white which was already very unusual for Looney Tunes in the mid-1940s since Warner Bros. usually filmed in color after Puss n' Booty (1943).
*This name generally refers to female English speaking Japanese broadcasters (propagandists) but in this clip might be realated to the most famous one Iva Ikuko Toguri D'Aquino.
"The Series E bond was withdrawn on June 30, 1980, when the Series EE bond replaced it, and the War Bond became history."
There were three more films of the Mr. Hook series produced, which are Take Heed Mr. Tojo (1943), The Return of Mr. Hook (1945) & The Good Egg (1945). And also both 45er were filmed in black-and-white.

2. 'My Bonnie (Lies Over the Ocean)' is an old Scottish folk song from the 19th century.

Got a copyright notice from Youtube since Marko Fürstenberg was making a song out of this speech called Dwights Warning*. Funny. In case there might be a commercial involved, somebody else put it there. I tried to 'remove' the sound recording 6:57 - 9:00, but "Song removal failed. We could not remove the copyright claim."

By the way, this is unlawful:
"No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility."
(United States Constitution, Article I, section 10, clause 1)
Of course, this clause is older than the Greenbacks which became legal tender by law in 1861 (when civil war started) and which were not backed by gold or silver but the 'credibility' of the U.S. government had to be enough.
Aftermath of the Nixon Shock:
The official end of the Bretton Woods System came in 1973 when countries decided to let their money freely float and the gold price suddenly started to sky rocket. After all, USA managed to keep their currency up and connect it to the most important natural resources like oil. In that sense, the currency is mainly covered by petroleum (and the pressure USA can put onto OPEC countries and others) - the petrodollar was born which so far, could preserve the supremacy of the Unites States. Also prices for oil and gas exploded.
Attempts by Saddam Hussein (former president of Iraq) to exchange petroleum with 'petroeuro' or 'petroyen' failed like attempts by Muammar Gaddafi (Libya) to install a gold dinar system. In 2011, Russian president Putin declared in public that from now on, Russa and China will exclusively trade their goods in rubel and renminbi (aka yuan, which is its basic unit).
Prelude (?!):
It is often stated that French president Charles de Gaulle (Pres. from 1959-69) forced Nixon to end the gold standard when in 1965, he announced his intent to convert US-dollars owned by his country into gold. The IMF (international money fund) stated that in 1966, foreign countries owned about 14 billion US-$ meanwhile USA held gold of about 13.6 billion bucks in total, whereas only 3.2 billion of them were designated to convert to foreign currencies.
Indeed, the French called the Bretton Woods System "America's exorbitant privilege" and after de Gaulle sent a battle ship over the Atlantic Ocean to pick up some gold, other countries followed...

"Captain Eric Melrose "Winkle" Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, Hon FRAeS,
RN (21 January 1919 – 21 February 2016) was a British Royal Navy officer and test pilot who flew 487 different types of aircraft, more than anyone else in history. He was also the most-decorated pilot in the history of the Royal Navy.
Brown held the world record for the most aircraft carrier deck take-offs and landings performed (2,407 and 2,271 respectively)[1] and achieved several "firsts" in naval aviation, including the first landings on an aircraft carrier of a twin-engined aircraft, an aircraft with a tricycle undercarriage, a jet propelled aircraft, and rotary-wing aircraft.
He also flew almost every category of RAF aircraft: glider, fighter, bomber, airliner, amphibian, flying boat, and helicopter. During the Second World War, he also flew many types of captured German aircraft, including new jets and rocket planes. He was a pioneer of jet technology into the postwar era."

(Natürlicher ist 9.0–0, was u.a. in Alapin-Tschigorin, 1880 gespielt worden ist. Schwarz zog nun 10...
