Once Upon a Time Across the World
Nakari Speardane 2021-08-21 | People all over the world tell stories, and different languages have different ways to introduce those stories. And there are patterns in these methods! A couple notes: For why seven is a ~mystical number, this video has some interesting stuff in the end half: youtube.com/watch?v=vpRd52dXHlQ&ab_channel=It%27sOkayToBeSmart Definition of folktale is... difficult. I've gone with what sounded best and seemed to fit best with the kinds of stories these phrases are used for. Like, you get "Once upon a time" for things like Goldilocks, but not really for stories about Merlin, cause that's closer tied to history/real locations. And some cultures just don't seem to see stories in this way, or don't have a set stock phrase, so they aren't here. But I didn't want to talk about this for too long :P You might notice there are ads now - I'm figuring out what I want to do with monetization/how much it's worth it. Half of whatever I make from this video, for at least the next month, will go to sola-afghanistan.org , an Afghan school for girls. Nakari Speardane 2021-01-23 | Time for some linguistics AND anthropology! Kinship systems are basically what terms people use for family members and why, and of course different societies have different strategies for this. I'm only talking about the basic ones, and other systems are also super interesting! But I think breaking down what makes the basic ones tick is useful especially for worldbuilders. Next video will have a bit of putting this into practice. There are lots of resources for this, but for more detail I'd recommend umanitoba.ca/faculties/arts/anthropology/tutor/kinterms/termsys.html - it's got a few examples of systems in practise too. Building the World from Within
Nakari Speardane 2020-11-28 | Next stop on the Elush world history tour: the Palaeolithic, via archaeological theory! I’ve been reading about how people construct their worlds from the inside. It’s kinda weird and interesting to look at the world around you and see how much is natural and how much is a layer of human choice or consciousness. Even if you go to a ‘natural’ space, often it’s left natural by human choice, and your understanding of it will be shaped by human constructs… there is no escape ;-; Patreon:patreon.com/nakarispeardane Sources: Colin Renfrew, The Emergence of Civilization, 1972 https://archeologie.culture.fr/chauvet/en https://archeologie.culture.fr/lascaux/endavidneat.wordpress.com/arts-origins/the-origins-of-artistic-expression-part-1-things-looking-like-other-things http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/871930.stm Music: Garden Music by Kevin MacLeod Link: filmmusic.io/song/3796-garden-music License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 freesound.org/people/markb/sounds/95490 freesound.org/people/sagetyrtle/sounds/62487 Photos:davidneat.wordpress.com/arts-origins/the-origins-of-artistic-expression-part-1-things-looking-like-other-things en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bison_Licking_Insect_Bite commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NL-RedOchre.png flickr.com/photos/pamontgo/39469181785 flickr.com/photos/dalbera/30146996994 flickr.com/photos/mathowie/271896770 flickr.com/photos/186236561@N02/49978087393 flickr.com/photos/jannem/2917429977 flickr.com/photos/26781577@N07/29526104131 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/325858 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/323735 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/815448 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/324145 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/324147 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/324153 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/324151 metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/324152

Randomly Generating Archaeology
Nakari Speardane 2020-10-10 | https://repl.it/@nakarispeardane/Grave-Generator Press run, or the green triangle on mobile, for instant grave! Feel free to edit the code if you want. It’s not the greatest code - I literally learned just enough to make this - but it should at least be clear where to go if you want to add extra animals for example. Nakari Speardane 2020-09-12 | I wanted to figure out the foundations of Elush but turns out they go back really far back in time, so now I'm figuring out how to evolve fire. Also, I started a Patreon cause a few people were asking about it!patreon.com/nakarispeardane (but also there are plenty of things in the world that need money more than I do, so I'll also be super happy if you give whatever you might spend on my Patreon to causes like:painteddog.org gofundme.com/f/milwaukee-first-aid-supplies trusselltrust.org ) ♡ Tranquility Base by Kevin MacLeod Link: filmmusic.io/song/4542-tranquility-base License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 flickr.com/photos/svacher/40681149681 flickr.com/photos/53847710@N04/4978650765 flickr.com/photos/berniedup/14017381654 flickr.com/photos/flowcomm/13949089869 flickr.com/photos/flowcomm/50266630792

Different Ways to Develop Colour
Nakari Speardane 2020-07-18 | The basic colour term theory is good. But it doesn't really go into the weirdness of colour, or how history can shape how people think of colour, or why orange is a LIE. A Life in a Jar | Worldbuilding
Nakari Speardane 2020-06-13 | So, following on from my other video about pottery... here's a little snippet of how pottery plays a role in Elush society! This has some influence from Susan Lape's "Race and Citizen Identity in the Classical Athenian Democracy" - particularly how believing you're born from the earth itself can reinforce barriers on identity. Maybe I'll talk about that some time! Nightdreams by Kevin MacLeod Link: filmmusic.io/song/4132-nightdreams License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0
Seeing the World Through Pottery
Nakari Speardane 2020-05-16 | I was going to do some worldbuilding with pottery, and then I got reading more about pottery and what we can learn from it, and now I’m excited about pottery’s place in the world, so here’s some cool stuff about pottery!
