They are one of the biggest drivers of player behavior, for better and for worse, and I thought it'd be worthwhile to look into how they work in a lot of games, and examine the ups and downs of any given approach because like all things game design, there is no perfect way to do it, but there are some ways that are cooler than others. Baldur's Gate 3 is a game with an unprecedented amount of player choice. There are so many ways to interact with the world, and that made me wonder: what would it be like for someone who learning the ins and outs of video games? So, I had my wife play it to find out, and now you can watch to also find out.
2023 has been another year, and, as always, video games were a huge part of it for me. Beyond just being a form of entertainment, they helped me reflect a lot on who I am right now, and that opportunity has been invaluable. With Tears of the Kingdom's release, I wanted to drop my wife back into the world of Hyrule to see how she handles this iteration's increased mechanical complexity, so that's what I did, and, as always, it was a lot of fun to watch. She certainly has come a long way since first playing Breath of the Wild, so it was a joy to watch her take the next step in her video game education.

Since putting out "The Games I Wish I Hadn't Replayed" I've been thinking a lot about games from my past, and how I feel about them now, and one thing I started to realize is that there are a handful of games that I feels as if I love, but honestly can barely tell you anything about them. This is a natural part of life, but the part of it I keep getting hung up on is that I have many opinions on games and other things despite having virtually no memory of them. So, I wanted to dig into it a bit by looking at a few games I've forgotten, whether or not anything can be done about it, and, of course, if anything should be done about it.
Music is a powerful tool that can be used to get people to feel a certain way, and I think some of the best examples of it being implemented effectively can be seen with villain themes. When done right, they can create such a suffocating feel to them and I want to look at some of the ways three of my favorite villain themes are successful in creating that sense.

DLC encompasses a vast amount of content, and while there are many pieces of it that are disposable, there are others that provide experiences that rival and even exceed the quality of the base game. From Blood and Wine to Minerva's Den, these expansions are some of the best video game content out there, and in this video I not only wanted to look into why that is but also into how it comes to be, so I reached out to a few developers to learn about what goes into making DLC.
The thing about having a favorite anything is that there is a more than decent chance that one day it no longer will be your favorite, and that shift can be jarring. This video explores how this has happened to me with 3 of my favorite (or rather formerly favorite) games, and asks the most important question of all: what is wrong with me?
With 2022 past its close, I wanted to take some time to reflect on the games I played this year as well as what it has been like to be a new dad. In it I explore some of the things I found in Dad(tm) games like The Witcher 3 and God of War Ragnarok as well as lessons I learned in things less dad centric, like Tunic and Vampire Survivors.
Reports of Gaming For A Non-Gamers' death have been greatly exaggerated. For this episode, I had my wife try out one of FromSoft's many masterpieces, Elden Ring. While the Soulsborne series is notoriously difficult, especially for those who are trying to get into it for the first time, I was curious to see the ways in which Elden Ring attempts to ease in new players, and I was surprised to see that it does way more than most give it credit for.
There are a ton of ways to play a game outside of how the developers intended it to be played, and people's desire to do that has always fascinated me. What about certain titles makes them so interesting to mess around in and why is playing games in weird ways so appealing to so many people? So this video is a look at some of the reasons I (and others) enjoy playing games in the "wrong" way.
One of the primary ways we talk about games is by comparing them to other titles--sometimes ones that are similar and sometimes ones that aren't. Unsurprisingly this leads to a fair amount of misunderstandings about games, and I think it's worth looking at the major ways comparison influences gaming discourse and discuss whether or not it is net positive or negative. Mini-maps. Love them or hate them, they are in a ton of games, and they are extremely useful. So much so that, oftentimes, turning them off isn't a viable option. In this video, I examine ways in which mini-maps are over-relied on in certain titles (The Witcher 3) as well as games that are designed in a way that don't really need any sort of navigational UI (Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring).

Walking. It is in a lot of games, and on its own, it is kind of boring. However, plenty of games that use it are still enjoyable. From Death Stranding to various Naughty Dog games to anything in the walking-sim genre, people don't get bored out of their mind while playing them, so how is that? While open-world games aim to be ambitious in ways few games are, they often end up following a structure that doesn’t actually support their worlds. Where a game decides to roll its end credits has a massive impact on player behavior. It is a signal that the "intended experience" has been completed, but as many games have extremely important optional content, this can end up causing players to miss out on what makes a game truly special. Sound design is an incredibly important part of games and really all media that sometimes doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The way sound designers are able to communicate ideas and emotions through sounds alone is incredibly fascinating, and I’ve found myself being drawn to how sounds relate to one particular emotion: loneliness. Waiting kind of is not fun. When I was younger, nearly every time I played a new game, I couldn't help but think "this is the best game I've ever played." As I have gotten older that feeling happens for less often, and I wanted to explore some of the reasons why. This video looks at how the industry has shifted over the years as well as how I have shifted over the years, and how the intersection of the 2 has changed the way I engage with games.

I've been playing a lot of short open-world games, and despite them only taking a couple hours to beat, there is something about a lot of them that just feels massive. Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games ever made, but there are elements about it that I wish had been a bit different. Here is my best attempt at trying to solve those problems without reinventing the whole game. Getting all of the achievements and trophies in a game is often a grueling task that I am intrigued by, but I almost always walk away feeling disappointed. With all of the talk The Last of Us Part 2's controversial story choices and general narrative, I figured it was about time to talk about a subject that everyone has been asking for: the similarities between The Last of Us Part 2 and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. I know this comparison has already been made thousands, if not millions of times, so I appreciate you bearing with me as I talk about it. So, this is a look at Hope, Humanity, and the Post-Apocalypse through the lens of The Last of Us series and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
In all seriousness, these are two properties I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and it has been interesting to see a lot of similarities pop up between The Last of Us Part II and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts despite the two being very, very different stories.
