Ryu Ga Gotoku spin-offs tend to lean more on the side of having a fun romp through a fictional world based on a historic time period, wacky premise, or intellectual property- as opposed to providing a thoughtful discussion on specific themes or ideas. Like A Dragon: Ishin! breaks the spin-off mold for better and worse: A remake of a highly sought after Japan-exclusive, finally brought over to the West much to the excitement of Western audiences, going completely mask off with seconds left on the clock in such a way, you’ll be shocked this thing ever got remade at all. There’s a lot to unpack here, and definitely some to leave stored away in the deep recesses of RGG Studios history. Where no one will ever look again. But for one time only, come along, and let’s talk about a few reasons to play Like A Dragon: Ishin, and a couple of story beats to be wary of.

On this episode, we take a look at gambling in video games, the why and how it ends up in the games we love, and how that might affect some of us- or at least how it affected me. From Dead Rising to Pokemon. From New Vegas to Red Dead Redemption. Here's How The Gaming Industry Made Me A Gambling Addict.
Nowadays gambling is an industry estimated to be worth over 700 billion US dollars. It’s a global market built around finding ways to sucker people out of their money with the false promise they might be the lucky few to win it big. This means a ton of money goes into advertising the joy of gambling…including making it seem mega-cool and awesome to do. And so far it’s working pretty well. Tons of movies give gambling this debonair aesthetic with a dash of danger. We have books on the art of gambling. Professionals with the ins and outs of moving the odds in your favor do seminars on gambling. Heck, we got gambling tournaments, hosted in cities dedicated to gambling. And…Video games…! Are full of references to casinos and have been shoveling gambling mini-games and mechanics into the hands of players since, at the very least, the 80s.
Ever since, gambling mini-games have evolved from simple slot machines your typical first-year Computer Science student can program, to complex card games and even cheating mechanics to outsmart your opponents in a different way. Have you ever wondered why though, why adding gambling to games is so popular? Well, there’s plenty of reasons; Simplest one: art imitates life! People put entertainment they enjoy in the entertainment they create. Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, is a well-known gambler and loves recreating his favorite casinos in his games. Dragon Quest XI’s casinos, for example, strongly resemble Caesar’s Palace and the Venetian, respectively. But the series has had gambling since Dragon Quest III, where players could bet on monster fights. Yeah I know: I try to shoehorn Dragon Quest into everything. I’m sorry! At least it’s relevant this time!
Another great reason: realism! In the early 19th century, poker exploded in popularity here in the United States on gambling boats along the Mississippi River and in Louisiana. It kept growing from there, and many other variants of Poker, including Texas Hold ‘Em, were born from it. It’s become a center stage attraction at casinos, and the World Series of Poker is a huge event every year now. Any game set in the 19th and 20th century, especially in the United States, would lack authenticity without a poker mini-game- or a table and a bunch of dusty old folks hunched over some cards. Games aiming for historical accuracy like Red Dead Redemption, without poker, are like a cowboy without their horse; missing a vital piece of the whole historic ensemble. Likewise, games like Dead Rising 2 are literally on a casino strip. It’d be strange if there weren’t slot machines and poker matches at all!
In video games? No one can stop me, and nobody cares how far I go. After all, the currency I’m using, traditionally, is entirely virtual. Fable 2’s pub games weren’t going to drive me into debt in real-life, and neither would playing Blackjack in Fallout New Vegas. And I’m old enough to separate fact from fiction. I know the excessive gambling I’m doing is a terrible habit to commit to outside of this fantasy experience I’m indulging in. One theoretically without consequences. One where I can turn the game off without wondering where my money went. But I’m speaking with hindsight. With wisdom learned from my personal past with gambling. I also know the line between fantasy and reality, when it comes to gambling, can blur for many people. In other words: Just because you aren’t actually losing money, doesn’t mean you aren’t still developing the habit.

Mass Effect was a formative trilogy of RPGs for me in high school, so I wanted to revisit a perceived classic to reevaluate how I felt about it. Most of it held up! Except all the extremely important parts. Mass Effect in general is…a bit confused. Trying to posture as one thing, and still reinforcing the opposite in the spirit of pulling in as many different players as it can. But in spite of its confusion, Mass Effect holds within a plethora of deeply moving and complex characters who explore social issues of its time to varying success as well as present us with challenging relationships and conversations we may not ever have in real-life given our beliefs or ideologies. The companions and squadmates we meet along the way to saving the galaxy are a collection of misfits and ne'er-do-wells, soldiers and mercenaries, perfectionists, paragons, realists, and renegades. Our subject today is one such companion and unlikely friend. A survivor of Mass Effect’s confused theming. A victim of its ignorance. What makes him a fan favorite, what stands him out among the rest despite only being a squadmate in one Mass Effect and potentially never surviving past it, is the state of his very existence. Caught in the middle of breaking down in-game stereotypes, while having those same stereotypes pushed upon him by game elements both diegetic and otherwise. He represents the awkward balance between Mass Effect’s messaging and its mistakes. He’s everything good, everything bad, and everything odd about the series. And he’s my favorite character from the original Mass Effect. I’m GC and this is the ballad of Urdnot Wrex.

Factors can range from main story length, to genre, to whether or not it’s an indie- you name it. But I’ve noticed I’ve never really cared much for one, particular, popular criteria: Replay Value. I see it mentioned in all sorts of places; from reviews, to tweets, to press kits, replay value is a highly sought after quality in video games, and it’s often what many game publishers will pride themselves on ensuring in their products. As a perfect human being with absolutely no flaws whatsoever, this dissonance between my feelings and that of an industry I project my identity onto was concerning. I did a little check in with myself about why I’ve gradually grown out of needing games to have replay value. Was I too old and therefore too busy with other responsibilities to care for replay value? Maybe I prefer to play a game once and move onto the next thing- whether or not I finished it of course. This deeply reflective process leading to my third eye opening and revealing to me the secrets I’d worked so long and hard to understand happened over the lengthy course…of a two-hour Twitch stream I was doing at eleven in the morning. Half-asleep. And hungover. But it felt like I had been streaming that day, for months. And in in-game time, that might as well be years. Joking aside, I really did come to a funny conclusion about it live on one of my 4-day a week Twitch streams. Replay Value is made-up. Replay Value doesn’t exist. The phrase “Replay Value” Is Nonsense.

Sure, the mystery was as exciting as waiting in-line at the self check-out of your nearest discount grocery store, and the dialogue was pumped full of more fun facts than a bar owner hosting trivia night to keep the lights on, but it had promise. Takuya Kimura and Shinshu Fuji had great on-screen chemistry as Yagami and Kaito respectively. Scenes including the detective duo had a great balance of action, melodrama, and comedic timing. Though sporadic, chewing scenery as a detective in a classically long Ryu Ga Gotoku cutscene kept you invested in the Yagami character- even if what you were investing into was a detective who couldn’t deduce himself out of a cardboard box. And of course, the fighting and playspots in Judgment carried the whole experience on its back. Like a fire truck strapped to a sea turtle. Retaliating in self-defense by inflicting open head wounds had never felt so good, with the Dragon Engine finally delivering solid hit feedback, toning down the ragdoll effects, and making Yagami a technical fighter centered around precise combo attacks. Things weren’t looking great, but there was room to grow and reason to believe improvement was certain in the event of a sequel. And a sequel we got! Lost Judgment sees the detective arrive in Yokohama with a singular mission: end bullying forever.
If Judgment was a friend with the chance to grow from their mistakes then Lost Judgment is the friend who doubled down and made their mistakes their entire personality. Yakuza 6 was written by an angry man. Judgment was written by a man with his head in the clouds. Lost Judgment was written by a Nosferatu who hasn’t left its crypt in four hundred years. The plot twist to this cute joke I wrote is: all these entries have the same writer: Tsuyoshi Furuta, and at this point his writing, what I don’t like about it anyway, can no longer be given the benefit of the doubt. I’ve got nothing against the man personally, but his work is infuriatingly unsatisfactory. Lost Judgment is no exception, and a perfect microcosm of his weaknesses as a writer. Look, creating anything is hard. Writing is monumentally hard, and writing for games- especially games on tight deadlines- is excruciatingly difficult. But it’s not like we don’t have a point of reference for the quality standards we’ve come to expect from this studio. They’re not exactly the next Nobel Prize candidates, but there are standout entries with captivating plot lines and meaningful subtext in RGG Studios’s catalog. Tsuyoshi Furuta doesn’t need to suck me silly from the back with the world’s next piece of biblical storytelling; all he needs to do is deliver a satisfying, cohesive narrative on the level- or in the range of- a standard Ryu Ga Gotoku story. What he delivers with Lost Judgment is a confusing, convoluted tale that loses the strength of its messaging due to his over-reliance on bad writing techniques. #lostjudgment #likeadragon #ryugagotoku #sega #GCVazquez ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ► twitter.com/GC__Vazquez ► patreon.com/GCVazquez ► twitch.tv/GCVazquez ► http://www.youtube.com/c/GCVazquez?sub_confirmation=1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Questrospective,GCVazquez,GC Vazquez,A Thirty-Minute Roast of Lost Judgment,The Roast of Lost Judgment,Lost Judgment review,A Rant About Lost Judgment,Takayuki Yagami in Lost Judgment,The Kaito Files is Really Good,I Love The Kaito Files,Lost Judgment is bad,Takuya Kimura in Lost Judgment,GC Vazquez Yakuza Videos,GC Vazquez Judgment Video,Lost Judgment School Stories review,Lost Judgment video essay,Lost Judgment is a bad game,Ryu Ga Gotoku Lost Judgment videoThe Greatest Game Ive Ever ReadGC Vazquez2023-07-14 | When I was a kid, my parents weren’t the most adamant about giving me new games to play. They were expensive, they were always an argument waiting to happen between my brother and I, and they were annoying to listen to in the living room. So no new releases for me. No old ones either as long as they were still above an arbitrary price point my parents would move the goalposts on in order to feel whimsy. But I was a smart kid, and I found a loophole. A weird loophole. A loophole which forever changed the course of my relationship with games. See, over at Cousin Vazquez’s house, little ol’ GC could play all the games he wanted! Hyperzone, Super Mario 64, The Ocarina of Time. My cousin’s world was my oyster! Until I had to go home, or until my cousin got sick of having me in their room. It was a seven year difference, so I get it. They probably had things to do. Weird, teenager things we don’t talk about. Because it’s weird and scary and teenagers are gremlins. Borrowing Cousin Vazquez’s games wasn’t unheard of…but it was rare and I had a pretty bad track record of losing them. But Cousin Vazquez also had…strategy guides. Strategy guides for all sorts of games. Official ones. Unofficial ones. An entire shelf on a bookcase’s worth of ones. Aha! Little GC might not be able to use the Super Nintendo or the Nintendo 64 while his cousins are using it, but he can read strategy guides. He can borrow strategy guides! And suddenly one day, scanning over a really funky Super Mario 64 strategy guide with the price tag still on the front, it hit me: Strategy Guides are cheaper than video games. And they’re books! And boy howdy do I love reading.
And this is how I grew attached to a lot of games as a kid! Before I learned to speedrun Super Mario 64, I read about how to grab all the stars in a strategy guide. Before I laughed my way through Donkey Kong 64, I was shouting “WHAT” at King K. Rool’s Island-mounted death cannon through the pages of a strategy guide! Before I chickened out of playing Siren, I was looking over my shoulder to check for ghosts reading, through, a strategy guide. And I knew those games front-to-back by the time I played them. I was a walking encyclopedia of games I never played! And I loved them. Now I told you this story to tell you another one. Of all the strategy guides I read, there’s one game I never found the closure for. One I never found the time to play despite it being one of the most compelling, satisfying reads I’ve had. Until now. And it’s the Greatest Game I’ve Ever Read.

If there’s one thing game developers can’t get enough of, it’s packing in an entire other game into one they’re already working on. And there’s nothing, nothing more popular than building your own card game in the middle of your other, bigger game development project, and finding an organic way to include it in the deadline. But before we can get into card games (in) games history and explore the breadth of its presence, we have to lay down some ground rules. Because according to my Twitter surveying, some of you don’t know the difference between a card game, and a card game. What is this, What is this? Baten Kaitos? NOT A CARD GAME! Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories?! NOT. A CARD GAME. I’m not talking about card games, I’m talking about CARD GAMES. Poker has its place in our world, but it’s not the feature creeping, side quest obsessing, back of the box promotion a card game is. What I’m referring to, is something closer to Magic: The Gathering or the Pokemon Trading Card Game. The kind of card game you pick up in chapter two of a turn-based RPG, and go around its world challenging other players to. But we’re not talking about video game card games, which are digital counterparts to physical card games, nor video games which use card game mechanics as its core gameplay- but we’ll get into those later. Don’t worry, I have plans for them.
No for me what card games (in) games really means are those precious wonders of Sunday afternoons. The kind of day where it’s too late to make significant story progress before work or school tomorrow, but not late enough to sit there and do nothing, and oh! How you so badly want to return to the land of neverwas and exist among its people in some way…! But ohhhh you can. YOU, CAN. Pull the deck of cards from your inventory, ask them if they partake in the ruler’s game, and lay WASTE to their SORRY-ASS DECK. BRO, WHAT KIND OF SELF-RESPECTING INDIVIDUAL RUNS A 1-2-1-1 IN THEIR DECK? GET OUT OF HERE, KID. [Clears throat] I uh- I may have been a part of the Yu-Gi-Oh community at some point? My therapist says progress isn’t linear. When I say Card Games (In) Games, I’m talking about mini-games which change the way we view the setting we’re already a part of. I’m talking about the grounded irony of high-fantasy characters whipping out a deck of cards and sitting down at a table, regalia and all, to play a few games of cardboard. I’m hesitant to call Like A Dragon “Like A Dragon Quest” because in truth it borrows much from other RPGs as well. The job system and even unique character classes each party member can take are definitely reminiscent of Dragon Quest. Ichiban’s Hero class is parallel with Dragon Quest 3’s Hero. Both possess a basic offensive spell that grows stronger at higher levels, both possess strong healing abilities and have mid-level magic points, meaning casting spells is always the second option to basic attacks. Nanba is the Sage class, possessing both strong offensive and healing spells with the magic power to back it up, but trading off health to do so. Adachi is your classic Warrior tank, and Saeko is your fighter with a little bit of thief mixed in. Enemies in Seven are grouped into archetypes similar to Dragon Quest’s enemies, with stronger versions of the same archetype changing in outfit colors or donning more extreme versions of their clothes. Our map is an overworld with distinct regions, and the enemies in those regions have unique level ranges that immediately deter players from being there if they’re too low a level. Like A Dragon Seven even sports a no game-over option where you lose half your money- just like in Dragon Quest.
But that’s where the similarities end. Like A Dragon Seven also borrows from Pokemon, turning every enemy into a Sugimon, and challenging the player to “fight them all” and complete the Sugidex, a bestiary collecting information on all the weirdos of Yokohama and beyond. It takes the social mechanics from Persona and gives Ichiban a social stat wheel he can increase with certain dialogue choices and actions, as well as a social link system between Ichiban and his party members. Seven also has action commands in the style of the Super Mario RPGs. Timed presses can increase damage on attacks or reduce damage on well-timed blocks. And no heavily inspired RPG would be without Final Fantasy summons, which of course, Seven has plenty of. Although Dragon Quest is an integral part of Kasuga Ichiban’s backstory, Like A Dragon Seven doesn’t pigeon-hole itself into Dragon Quest trappings, and in fact, comes off as a celebration of turn-based RPGs in general. However, it’s after taking all of this into account when seven’s strength as a turn-based RPG begins to wane.

There are few characters from the Ryu Ga Gotoku franchise who aren’t prime candidates for a dedicated ballad. The series is ripe with supporting roles who’ve been fleshed out into memorable pillars keeping every entry upright with stories of their own. Daigo Dojima’s encapsulates privilege. Shun Akiyama’s revolves around the momentum of financial power. But somewhere in the middle of this very tiny spectrum I’ve just arbitrarily constructed inside your mind is Kiryu’s closest ally and Ryu Ga Gotoku’s forgotten keystone. One whose growth is determined by the role he’s needed to fill by the narrative- and somehow still has a clear throughline. A hero’s journey in a series not really known for using said literary mechanism. It speaks on authoritative power, how it’s designed to maintain appearances and uphold a status quo in a system meant to keep people under the thumb of a ruling class. How removal of said oppression is only possible from the outside of such an organization. And it kind of botches the job towards the end? It’s messy. Messy enough to warrant a conversation. Messy enough to make it a fascinating character study. I’m GC, and this is the ballad of Makoto Date.

He’s so happy about this, he decides his freelancing work for Weekly Shonen Jump isn’t enough to satiate his creativity, and becomes a videogame designer. Citation for the timeline on this is needed, since there’s conflicting reports. All by himself, he creates The Portopia Serial Murder Case. Now Portopia isn’t too important; it only inspired several video game legends, almost sold a million copies in an era where game audiences were smaller, and redefined what a visual novel was and remains the legendary foundation set for visual novels today. But y’know- no biggie. Horii isn’t satisfied with his latest hit. After a few more visual novels under his belt, he wants to create a different experience. He’s inspired by his favorite computer RPGs, and wants to dabble in a little fantasy. He assembles a team. You know how this goes: With the help of his manager at Shonen Jump, Horii asks Akira Toriyama to do the art and character designs for this new fantasy RPG idea. Toriyama, already a successful mangaka after creating the popular Dr. Slump and afterwards Dragon Ball serieses, signs up for the project. Then, and retroactively unfortunately, a passionate fan letter from esteemed composer Koichi Sugiyama, complimenting Enix on their shogi videogame, inspires the company to hire him to compose for them. He says yes. This eventually leads to the now dead, and while-alive known holocaust denier and homophobe Koichi Sugiyama to compose for the legendary RPG that started it all…Dragon Quest.

This is the big one. Of all the quirky additions and classic staples of video game features, fishing is one of the earliest instant success stories with the most obvious reach. It stretches across the genres, across time, across hemispheres, and has almost become a mandated inclusion by the industry and its consumers. Its implementation encompasses every part of the spectrum. From simple button press mini-games to fully fleshed out simulations with lure and line choices meant to optimize catching specific fish. Video games have covered fishing in almost every incarnation: as pastime, as career, as sport, as survival skill, the list goes on and on. Fishing’s the chum in the water, and we’re frenzying at the smell. We’ve fallen for fishing hook, line and sinker. And today we’re going to learn a little about why, and what you find out might surprise you! Fishing in games isn’t just a neat side-activity; there’s a significant purpose behind its inclusion, and several reasons we gravitate to it like bait on a line. Sounds a bit fishy? Trust me, after this deep dive, you’ll be swimming to my tune. But that’s enough floundering around, school is in session, and I’d like to keep things flowing. I’m also getting tired of these puns. They stink- you could say they smell a bit…fishy?...Fish. Fish puns.

They made games about everything back in the day. Cooking in games, technically, started with the Burger Time Arcade game in 1982, and expanded into the tycoon genre with a bunch of titles about managing restaurants and serving guests. While these certainly are cooking-based games, they’re not really what I’m referring to when I say Cooking (In) Games. There’s a cooking element, sure, but the art of cooking isn’t present. The spirit, the soul of cooking is absent. Burger Time’s a platformer inspired by Donkey Kong. Those tycoon games are more about managing restaurants. Ironically, you don’t really do a whole lot of cooking in them. No, when we talk about cooking in games, we’re talking about something a little more appreciative of the culinary arts. Food prep! Cooking itself! Presentation! The building blocks of wasteful, expensive restaurants and Instagram food pics! These factors are what make the act of cooking so enjoyable, and the act of Cooking In Games memorable. And that is a little harder to track down in history.

“Eyes like these can’t see much. Can’t tell an innocent man from a murderer.” The search for truth is fraught with wrong turns and blind eyes. In the crumbling halls of justice, where the stands cast dark shadows on the innocent, and the guilty hold the gavel, the truth dies. There might be no saving it. You can cast a light down the corridors. Rip the curtains from the wall and bathe the room in the Sun. But the more you shine from on high, the darker those shadows get. The harder it is to see the filth in those places light will never reach. But down there, where you can’t see. That’s where the truth is. “For a lawyer, the job ends when he’s proven the client innocent of all crimes. That said…I’m not a lawyer anymore.” No. It’s better not to force the issue. It might be darker than you’d like, but it keeps the shadows weak, mild, penetrable. Once your eyes adjust, you see things clearly. The monsters underneath our beds. The skeletons in our closets. And the truth.
On September 20-something 2018, Toshihiro Nagoshi appeared on-stage at the Tokyo Game Show with fandom-shaking news. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios would be making a brand new IP, helmed by Nagoshi himself. Hesitant to call it a spin-off, as they had so willingly done before, he insisted this title would be a new taste of what RGG Studios could offer. Dubbing it a legal thriller or legal suspense depending on who’s translating, it would revolve around one Takayuki Yagami, an ex-lawyer turned detective, hounded by a case from his past. Nagoshi mentioned the player would be performing their own investigations, alluding to detective-like mechanics. It was a big promise from a studio which had only known one genre for the last fifteen years. Whether or not they made good on it, however, is our story here today. For we are the audience to RGG Studios’s ambition. Ours are the judging eyes that seek the truth. The time is nigh. And truth is within our grasp. This is Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Judgment.
…And I dunno, man! It’s kind of all over the place if I’m being honest!

Few people exist on an echelon of calibur more impressive than this man. Discarded by fate, shunned by a society he protects, and forgotten by the annals of history. An unsung hero. God among men. I am referring to none other than Paper Luigi. A paragon of the Paper Mario universe, and one of my favorite characters to watch evolve across the original three entries of the Paper Mario series, and I’m not kidding. Y’see, Paper Luigi might, in fact, be the origin of the modern characterization of Luigi in general. If he isn’t, then he certainly steered it into the loveable soft-hearted gentleman we see today. Most of the Paper versions of long-standing Mario characters were given more personality than they ever previously had. Paper Peach plays an active role in her own rescues. Paper Bowser is a rough-and-tough goofball, who constantly fumbles his plans due to his incompetent subordinates when he isn’t completely barking up the wrong tree. Paper Mario himself is a Mickey Mouse-esque interpretation of the character: energetic, out-spoken, but unlike Mickey, a little too polite sometimes. Yet none of them have as huge of a glow-up as Paper Luigi. A character who begins the series as a background element, to a background element, and steadily earns his place as a central party member, making mistakes all along the way. Whereas your Luigi Mansions will play up the cowardice of our subject today, Paper Mario aims to create a self-made bad-ass out of his early easter egg origins. I’m GC Vazquez, and this: Is “The Ballad of Paper Luigi.” ...Yes, really.

Quite possibly...one of the best Like A Dragon experiences!
Running off the Yakuza 0 engine (sorry Dragon Engine), Lost Paradise is anything but a wasted effort. With new HEAT move mechanics, an abundance of new playspots, and an open world to drive your very own buggy around, there's more to Lost Paradise than meets the eye. While it isn't part of the mainline Yakuza series, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise is still very much indicative of Yakuza's evolving game design. On today's Questrospective, we won't be breaking down the adapted Fist of the North Star story, nor will we even try to come away with an old-fashioned Questrospective takeaway. Instead, give me the opportunity to convince you that Lost Paradise is less of a spin-off than you think, and make the case for why you should absolutely play it on your journey through the series.

Welcome to Feature Creep! A series dedicated to those little features and mini-games we find all over the video game compendium. To start things off, I'm covering drinking in video games! An act we get a lot of laughs out of, that we might be taking for granted or not putting enough thought into.
Drinking in games has a weird history, largely because how cultures view drinking is incredibly varied from country to country. In the United States, prohibition and the temperance movement really cut down on our consumption of alcohol in general, and sort of shifted it into this more private affair. Not that we all still hide our drinking habits or anything, but we tend to view drinking with an eccentricity. Like this special thing. Compare this to some European countries, where the drinking age is lower, and alcohol consumption is almost a historical staple of dinner. A little bit of wine with every meal is relatively common in places like Spain, and because it doesn’t have this quirky taboo nature in those regions, children are pretty familiar with the concept of alcohol and don’t grow up viewing it like this rite of passage or forbidden nectar. Again, not that underage drinking doesn’t happen in these other places, but different societies treat drinking- and other things- differently. The way we treat drinking in our respective society influences how we portray those things in our respective media. And when said media crosses over into other countries or cultures, it sometimes has to play by said cultures’ rules. This is why we sometimes see references to alcohol in Japanese games changed, altered, or straight-up removed when they get localized for the West. But the iconography of drinking is harder to scrub out of a game’s identity. Drinking in video games is basically as old as video games themselves.

Someone on the art team had an armpit fetish. None of the women wear sleeves. Like ever. There’s a hard refusal to cover up the pits, and the pits are…I mean just always in frame. What’s up with that, why did they do that? Super weird. Anyway, Final Fantasy XIII is a divisive entry in the series nowadays. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of its insistence on automating a large part of turn-based RPG strategizing by encouraging style switching and hitting the auto button with mechanics built around having characters in a turn-based game attack very quickly in succession in order to properly dispatch enemies who attack at a rapid pace in order to pressure you into adhering to the same playstyle as everyone else. That being said, I’ve played Final Fantasy XIII a good amount more than other Final Fantasy games, in a fruitless attempt to understand what others enjoy about it. While I don’t think I’ll ever take to its gameplay elements…I also won’t take to its narrative ones either! XIII’s story feels very aimless and disjointed. Decent character moments are constantly overshadowed by an ambiguous central plot, and a boring premise we’ve seen in plenty of RPGs. Fighting destiny is…so basic and routine and can be built into better themes in this genre. Previous Final Fantasies accomplished as much and more. But I didn’t completely come away from XIII without enjoyment. Among the cast of redundant heroes and chopped up references and recycling of previous characters in Final Fantasy, one has stood out to me every time I pick XIII back up to give it another chance. He’s a character many of you might be fond of, and he’s a character I find a lot more grounded, believable, and compelling to watch. Despite the messy plot we watch him wander around in, his arc tells a great story. And between you and me, he would have made for a better protagonist. I’m GC Vazquez, and this is the ballad of Sazh Katzroy.
Welcome to the first episode of a series I'm dubbing "Character Ballads." Character Ballads are all about side characters or lesser-than-protagonist characters in games, I feel, are often overlooked or have their stories inaccurately reduced into a couple of sentences. This series is starting with The Ballad of Sazh Katzroy, a script I initially wrote way back in 2014 when I had just started making YouTube videos! Sazh is an underrated character in Final Fantasy XIII, and the inspiration behind the series. I'm hoping with my pieces on him and other characters you might recognize from other games, I can win them some points in your book. I'm really proud of this one, and I'm excited to show it to you all!

Thank you all so much for being patient. The time has finally come! Yakuza Kiwami 2 was a wonderful experience shadowed by a few Dragon Engine issues...or should I say Like A Dragon Kiwami 2? So much has happened since the last Questrospective I'M SO EXCITED.
Anyway, new voice actors casted into old roles, a fresh-faced return to favored combat elements, and a dedicated side story to one of the series' most iconic characters, dare I say it: Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a better finale to the Kiryu saga than Yakuza 6 was BY FAR. Seriously. The Majima Saga is some of the best writing the series has ever had! But it wasn't all fantastic. The Dragon Engine rears its ugly head once again, and poor representation needs to be addressed and examined, as Like A Dragon is dragged kicking and screaming into a better tomorrow. Have they righted wrongs in Yakuza Kiwami 2? Is it a faithful remake worth playing over the original? And will GC Vazquez use another Kiwami episode to remorsefully mull over his past? I’m not replaying Stardew Valley for the new content patched in long after I beat the game on release. I’m finding a little bit of solace inside of it at a time where I’m lost on where my life is going to go next, but I’m not talking about ten or twenty hours across a month of existential turmoil. I’m talking multiple playthroughs reaching thirty or forty hours in two weeks. Y’see, I’m not playing a normal version of Stardew Valley. I’m playing with mods. A metric boatload of mods. More mods than you’d expect. I have this uncanny habit of coming back to certain games just before they enter their next big surge of popularity or get a major facelift. So of course, I started modding up Stardew Valley for the upteenth time. Then shortly thereafter it was announced to be getting a 64-bit version which would, basically, allow Stardew to allocate more RAM for itself. It was also getting a new framework. Ideally, these make it possible to load more mods at once, and for mod authors to more easily create them. It got me thinking about modding in general; why people do it. Why games with mods seem to stand the test of time.

A book end to the Yakuza series and to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios' long-time work with a world revolving around one of SEGA's video game icons. One final adventure with the Dragon of Dojima, one last time to wave goodbye to Akiyama, Majima, Saejima, and the rest of Yakuza's rogue's gallery. One more moment with Haruka Sawamura and the orphans of Morning Glory Orphanage. One more gauntlet of HEAT moves and Karaoke songs- for old time's sake! Except for everything but that first sentence up there.
Unfortunately for us, today's Questrospective won't be another celebration Ryu Ga Gotoku nor an emotional retrospective take on a heartfelt, passionate tale. Today, we're disappointed. Today, we're getting critical. Literarily critical. Which means books and stuff. Yakuza 6 is a sales pitch for the Dragon Engine. Yakuza 6 is a pale shade of what Ryu Ga Gotoku has come to represent. Yakuza 6 harbors a much darker purpose (in my opinion) than to entertain folks or give them something meaningful to depart this part of the series with. It breeds contempt of others, it champions harmful ideas...and borders on being a thinly veiled piece of propaganda for Japanese ultra-nationalist interests. Brace yourself for some inarguably horrendous rhetoric.
Also, it just kinda sucks.

Yakuza Kiwami is the remake of the original Yakuza, renewed and refreshed for the audience the series pulled in with Yakuza 0, and for longtime fans. But with time comes age, and with age comes wisdom. Kiwami means Extreme, and playing Yakuza Kiwami has brought with it memories of this video series' beginnings- and my own feelings from when I set out to make it. For me, Kiwami is a little more- just a little more- than a remake of a beloved classic. It's a retrospective into my own past, my journey since, and a sense of closure I've been chasing for the last three years.

From Wikipedia: Yakuza Kiwami is an action-adventure video game developed by Sega. It is a remake of Yakuza, the first game in the Yakuza series, originally released on Sony's PlayStation 2. Yakuza Kiwami was released on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 21, 2016, and on PlayStation 4 in Europe and North America on August 29, 2017. It was also ported for Microsoft Windows worldwide on Steam on February 19, 2019, and was released on Xbox One on April 21, 2020.
Like the original PlayStation 2 game, Yakuza Kiwami explores the life of a man named Kazuma Kiryu who is demoted from his clan after taking the blame for his boss's murder. After a decade in prison, Kiryu searches for his old friends who have gone missing. The remake adds extra elements to the story, including Akira Nishikiyama's corruption during Kiryu's imprisonment and constant struggles between Kiryu and his rival Goro Majima. The gameplay was improved to resemble the prequel Yakuza 0, adding more depth to the fighting system.
Sega had ideas to remake the first Yakuza game in 2015 as part of the series' 10th anniversary but were unsure about developing due to their team focused on making Yakuza 0. Following the success of Yakuza 0, Sega started working on the remake of the first game and aimed to add new elements to the story while trying to make it more enjoyable than the original game. The game was well received, earning positive sales. Critics praised the simplicity of the gameplay but were divided by the handling of the storyline and pacing. Yakuza Kiwami was followed up by Yakuza 6: The Song of Life later in 2016, and another remake based on the second game titled Yakuza Kiwami 2 was also released in 2018.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yakuza 0 marked the 10-year anniversary of the series, which naturally became a point of retrospection for the creatives who had built their entire careers off it. A look back on how far they’d come, and how drastic of a shift the series has had since escalating in popularity. It provided an opportunity to speak on those origins. It also gave them insight into how far from the original concept Ryu Ga Gotoku had strayed from- and whether or not this was a good thing. Nagoshi saw Yakuza 0 as an opportunity for a reset. A way to balance out past and present, return to roots with the wisdom and innovation an entire decade can provide. He wanted to reflect this in the game’s characters, story, and setting. Ryu Ga Gotoku 0 takes place in 1988, during the economic bubble in Japan. Goro Majima. Kazuma Kiryu. In the 1980s, both of these men are far cries from the god characters we recognize them as, but deep down hold fast to similar convictions. They’re unrefined versions of their future selves, placed in situations designed to challenge and destroy their fledgling ideals. Their journeys will test their resolve, the dilemmas they face will strip away the illusions they’ve casted upon themselves, and the world they live in will do whatever it can to keep them under its heel. And they’ll need money. Lots of it. It Always. Comes Back. To Money. Join GC Positive on another Yakuza Questrospective, as we navigate the complicated reality of Kiryu and Majima's lives...and maybe learn a little bit about our own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #Yakuza0 #RyuGaGotoku #LikeADragon #SEGA #Yakuza
From Wikipedia: Yakuza 0 is an action-adventure game developed and published by Sega. It is the sixth main entry in the Yakuza series and a prequel to the original game. It was released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in March 2015, and in North America and Europe for PlayStation 4 in January 2017. It was released on Microsoft Windows on 1 August 2018 and was released on Xbox One on 26 February 2020. A free accompanying game application for PlayStation Vita, titled Ryū ga Gotoku 0: Free to Play Application for PlayStation Vita, was released in Japan in February 2015.
The game received generally favourable reviews from critics, and is largely responsible for the franchise's rise in popularity and sales in the West, the series being deemed obscure beforehand. Yakuza 0 was followed up by a remake of the original game, Yakuza Kiwami, the next chronological installment of the series. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GC Positive,Questrospective,Yakuza 0,Ryu Ga Gotoku 0,majima yakuza 0,yakuza 0 kiryu, yakuza 0 substories, yakuza 0 review, yakuza 0 analysis, goro majima, yakuza 0 questrospective,Yakuza 0: One's Own Justice,Yakuza 0: One's Own Justice | Questrospective,One's Own Justice, yakuza 0 retrospective, dame dame, baka mitai, yakuza 0 judgment,Judgment,WOW BREAKING THE LAW,WOW BREAKING THE WORLD,KOWASE,KIRISAKE TENDERNESS,WOAH WOAH WOAH,WOAH WOAH WE ARE BAD BOYSLore-Building Isnt World-BuildingGC Vazquez2021-03-26 | Human beings are pre-programmed to find patterns in all things. We love connecting those dots, finding shapes and faces in clouds and inanimate objects, we love to sort data until it makes sense to us. From this instinctual behavior is where modes of our subjectivity originate. It’s inevitable for the people ingesting media to crave explanations for plot holes and inconsistencies. When patterns are difficult to identify, stories stop making sense, character motivations can become confusing, and plot twists can fall flat. This is a very short and huge reduction of the conversation around subjectivity, but I hope you’re understanding me. Our way of identifying patterns is intrinsically unique to us, and a great deal of our subjectivity lies in it both when creating and when being an audience member. It’s the place from which headcanons and fan theories are born. It doesn’t matter if details are only secret for a short time; I once made a fan theory about Fallout 4 in the five month space between it being announced and released because all we could do at the time was speculate. I was, unfortunately, let down by the reality of Fallout 4’s central plot, and learned a hard fast lesson about Speculation:

Game completion is so obsessed nowadays, people gate-keep and invalidate each other’s opinions based on how far they made it while playing them. Being up-to-date on a long-running series seems to be more important than caring about its trajectory, its quality, and the conditions it was made in. People are so afraid of missing out on the “real impact” of a sequel they’ll prevent themselves from playing it until they beat the games leading up to it. We’re so desperate to be a part of the wave we’re insistent on buying the new thing, and beating it as fast as possible so that we’re riding at the very top. And the truth is, this is a reality we didn’t necessarily force ourselves into. It’s not the nature of recreation. It’s the nature of business.

But, given that I've looked at every other Supergiant game, why not look at Hades through that lens? As it turns out, it isn't just the next milestone on Supergiant's tenure, it also reflects their journey as a studio. From Bastion, to Transistor, to Pyre, Hades remembers where it came from, and underneath it's story about strife and conflict, is the tale of Supergiant Games themselves. About their close relationship with escape as a theme and concept. How their view on it has evolved across the last decade, and how their own growth has affected that. This is Hades and The House of Escape!
Hades is a roguelike action role-playing video game developed and published by Supergiant Games. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2020, which followed an early access release from December 2018.
Players control Zagreus, the son of Hades, as he attempts to escape from Underworld to reach Mount Olympus, at times aided by gifts bestowed on him from the other Olympians. Each run challenges the player through a random series of rooms populated with enemies and rewards. The game has a hack and slash combat system; the player uses a combination of their main weapon attack, dash power, and magic ability to defeat them while avoiding damage to progress as far as possible. While Zagreus will often die, the player can use gained treasure to improve certain attributes or unlock new weapons and abilities to improve chances of escaping on subsequent runs.
Hades was developed following Supergiant's Pyre, a game in which they wanted to explore procedural narrative storytelling, but due to the nature of the main gameplay, found that players did not play through Pyre multiple times to explore this. The roguelike structure of Hades gave them the opportunity to tell these branching stories to the player over the course of multiple runs. Hades received critical acclaim, particularly for its gameplay, art and narrative and was nominated for and won several awards, including Game of the Year by numerous publications.

I'd like to talk to you all about the way Latine and Hispanic people are represented in video games and games media. It's not great. Whether it's by washing out our unique cultural identities, painting us as villains, or worse yet, using our struggles to satisfy a guilty conscience, Latine and Hispanic people are often mishandled in games. From the coded Borderlands 2 characters Salvador and Mordecai, to the stereotyped Mexicans of Red Dead Redemption, to the missed opportunity with Evil Within's Sebastian Castellanos and Gears of War's Dominic Santiago. I’d like to break down these faux-pas, explain why they’re not acceptable forms of representation or at least not where they need to be, and maybe teach you a little bit about the incredibly vast and colorful differences between Central, South, and Caribbean-American cultures. This is a complicated discussion, but a necessary one. If there's anything I've made that I want people to see the most, it's this video. Right here. Right now. Yakuza 4 (Japanese: 龍が如く4 伝説を継ぐもの, Hepburn: Ryū ga Gotoku 4: Densetsu o Tsugumono, "Like a Dragon 4: Successor of the Legend") is a video game developed and released by Sega for the PlayStation 3. This was the first Yakuza game that did not feature the involvement of the current series producer and one of the members involved since the very first game, Daisuke Sato.

One year after the events of Yakuza 1, Kazuma Kiryu takes it upon himself to lay the Tojo clan's rivalry with the Omi to rest. But is the Dragon of Dojima really just doing his part, or is he haunted by the ghosts of his past? This Action RPG is a fantastic improvement from the first, but it's also a vehicle for Kiryu's torment. It's about surviving, doubting who you are, and the existential dread of both. Also Majima is wearing a hat in this one. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age won my heart over at release, and I'd like to share that with you. With a Nintendo Switch port on the way promising to bring with it 3DS content we never received internationally, it's as good a time as any to find out for yourself why you should pick this one up. It's my new favorite Dragon Quest, and you oughtta know why!

There were so many knockout titles last year, that it's safe to say most people didn't get to play all of them. But besides your Breath of the Wild, your Persona 5, your Super Mario Odyssey, and your Nier Automata, there was a massive amount of great indie games last year too! Let's take a look at maybe the best indie game of 2017, and one people had been looking forward to! Let's look at A Hat In Time!

And yet, here we are. It's 2017, and Supergiant Games has just released their third title, Pyre. Pyre is about self-reflection and heavy thoughts- and is a serious contender for game of the year!
You could say it's... a slam dunk?

So of course, when Playtonic Games, made up of ex- Rareware employees, were looking to bring back 3D Platformers as a whole with their Kickstarter for Yooka-Laylee, I was incredibly excited. Five months since its release, and my mood is a bit...different- however! I think writing Yooka-Laylee off as exemplifying the problem with games of the past is reductive and a bit silly. What works? What doesn't? Let's find out on this episode of GC Positive!

Games like the Souls series have started sprouting up all over the place, and it was only a matter of time before one set in feudal Japan happened. Let's talk about Nioh! An action RPG that's very quickly become one of my favorites.
