With all the excitement around Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth's Furiosa, I thought this would be a cool video to make.
Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) and "Transformers" (2007) are both high-octane action films, but they employ distinctly different editing and cinematographic techniques to captivate audiences.
Both films utilize their respective editing styles to enhance their storytelling: "Mad Max" with its relentless pace and stabilizing center-framing creates a streamlined narrative amidst chaos, whereas "Transformers" offers a more traditional blockbuster experience with its own brand of kinetic spectacle. Despite their different approaches, both films effectively use their visual strategies to immerse viewers in their thrilling cinematic worlds.
"Mad Max: Fury Road," directed by George Miller, is renowned for its frenetic editing style. This rapid editing pace creates a visceral viewing experience that reflects the chaotic, dystopian world of the film. Moreover, Miller employs a technique known as center-framing, where the subject of action is kept in the center of the frame. This method is particularly effective for eye-tracking, as it allows the audience to easily follow the action without needing to shift their gaze significantly, thus maintaining a continuous flow and understanding of the high-speed scenes.
In contrast, "Transformers," directed by Michael Bay, also features fast editing. The editing pace contributes to the dynamic nature of the film, highlighting the spectacular transformations and battle sequences between Autobots and Decepticons. However, unlike "Mad Max," "Transformers" does not adhere consistently to center-framing. Bay’s style is more eclectic, often using sweeping camera movements and rapidly changing angles that challenge the viewer’s eye-tracking ability. This can create a more disorienting effect, which, while dynamic, sometimes requires more effort from the audience to follow the action.

SUMMARY:
In this video, Dr. Karen Pearlman discusses the concept of trajectory phrasing as a tool for editors to shape rhythm in their work. She explains that editing is intuitive but can be broken down into specific elements such as timing, pacing, and trajectory phrasing. Timing refers to the placement, duration, and order of shots, while pacing involves the rate of cutting, movement within shots, and overall rate of change. Trajectory phrasing focuses on the energy and intention behind movement in shots. Pearlman emphasizes that AI cannot imitate the intention and emotional storytelling that editors bring to their work. She uses examples from the TV show "Ted Lasso" and the film "Babylon" to illustrate the use of trajectory phrasing. Pearlman suggests that editors should tune their eyes to the intention behind movement, refine their skills at phrasing, and use timing and pacing to build tension or release tension in their edits.

Looking at every cut of Magnolia, I created a visual board (thisguyedits.com/magnolia) of anything that I noticed and eventually arrived at building the film's different segments and story turns. I also discovered the clues of a 10th missing character that was almost completely removed from the film. It's a real whodunit. Check out my Patreon Bonus Story to find out.

Looking at every cut of Interstellar, I created a visual board (thisguyedits.com/interstellar) of anything that I noticed and eventually arrived at Murph's room, to be the key to the film's structure. Six scenes takes place in Murph's room prior to the 3rd Act climax with Cooper inside the Tesseract. Notably, Cooper witnesses seven moments as he skips through the different time layers. And there's a reason why.

TAKE THE DARKROOM EDITING CHALLENGE AND WIN:
thisguyedits.com/darkroom (Click the "Commercial Plan" Free Trial) - Rules and Instructions further down...
Take the 60 sec. editing challenge and win from a boatload of prizes: over $3000,-. (Be sure to read the tip at the bottom to increase your chance of winning.)
For this editing challenge, I partnered with Epidemic Sound, which is a premium library with 30,000 music tracks and 60,000 sound effects.
WOULD YOU BELIEVE ME when I tell you that sound is the most important part of editing? Take this challenge and find out for yourself. Can you engage an audience with just audio?
DO THIS: Get a 30-Day Free Trial COMMERCIAL PLAN from Epidemic Sound using this link: thisguyedits.com/darkroom. (Click the "Commercial Plan" Free Trial)
Download some music tracks and sound effects, feel free to cancel the account once you are done (you still get 30 days full access). Start designing your story. (Tip: You may want to also record some dialog or voice over to help with the story. Think about a concept where it would make sense that we don't see anything).
I want to pose this editing challenge to you with a chance to win the new DJI Mini Mavic (Fly More Kit), 6- and 3-month plans to the Epidemic Commercial Plan, free lifetime memberships to the Go-To Editor course, Screenbar Plus by BenQ and some cool merch from the new This Guy Edits line.
But what is the exact challenge?
Since we are focusing on audio, I'm asking you to edit a simple scene. Design a 60 sec (or less) film with just sound. No picture! Just sound.
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. It is not required to buy epidemic sounds. But I will judge each submission based only on storytelling AND sound design.
Round 2 of submissions is open now until:
July 15th for procrastinators (11.59pm PST)
PRIZES:
I will pick five winners from each round and one grand prize winner that wins the drone (So a total of eleven winners).
PLUS EVERYONE WHO SUBMITS A CUT (WIN OR LOSE) WILL GET A $150 OFF COUPON FOR THE GO-TO EDITOR COURSE 2.0 (thegotoeditor.com)

Guest expert Mark Edward Lewis from cinemasound.com shows some easy ways to take advantage of the free DaVinci Resolve software, using one of the most powerful EQ tools around.
After nearly 30 years of writing and producing musical scores, re-recording mixing, developing sound design, editing, writing and directing, Mark has a unique perspective on how to create high production value for independent productions.
What makes Mark an invaluable resource is his mastery of all aspects of audio production. One of the new breed of directors who approaches storytelling from an “audio first” perspective, Mark’s projects have a flow, pacing and emotional impact that few directors possess. Always strongly adhering to the axiom, “Post production begins in pre-production” Mark has righted many adrift productions with his organization, creativity, ingenuity, and cross-discipline experience.
Mark has worked professionally in nearly every area of production and post production including event development, most recently as a post-production supervisor on the Avenger’s S.T.A.T.I.O.N. with Frank Serafine. In 2016, he was the main presenter for the “Sound Advice” tour in North America and Australia where he taught over 1,200 filmmakers about improving their production value with better sound.

Lawrence Jordan, ACE is a veteran feature film and television editor who has worked with many of the top creatives at the world’s largest entertainment companies, including Time Warner, Sony, Fox, MGM, HBO, Netflix and Disney. He has supervised creative aspects of the post-production process on over 45 feature films and television shows with budgets ranging from 1 million to upwards of 80 million dollars.
He is currently editing his latest feature film, “Sextuplets” starring Marlon Wayans, Bresha Webb & Molly Shannon for Netflix.
With a passion for technology, Lawrence was fortunate to have the opportunity to be one of the earliest adopters of digital, non-linear, editing workflows. Along the way he became an adjunct professor at the American Film Institute’s Center for Advanced Studies, and created and taught courses on non-linear editing at UCLA. He has also been a consultant and speaker for companies such as Apple, Adobe, and Avid Technology. Jordan has also written articles for periodicals including American Cinematographer, Editors Guild Magazine, DV and MacWorld.
Jordan also created 2-pop.com, an Internet community dedicated to providing information about Apple’s revolutionary new post-production software, Final Cut Pro. 2-pop quickly became the premier web destination for the rapidly growing digital video marketplace and was a catalyst for FCP user group communities worldwide. It was later acquired by Creative Planet.

Effigy – Poison and the City is Udo Flohr’s first feature, which he also co-produces. It’s the true story of Gesche Gottfried, one of the first female serial killers ever identified, who murdered 15 people with rat poison between 1813 and 1827. She was found guilty of killing her parents, her three children, her twin brother, three husbands, and some friends and neighbors. Another 20 victims were lucky enough to survive. In 1831, Gottfried was executed for her crimes at age 46.
Effigy was shot in Germany and is scheduled for theatrical release in 2019. Thomas Kist, N.S.C. handled the cinematography. The screenplay was written by Peer Meter (based on his own stage play and on original court records), Udo Flohr, and Antonia Roeller. Set design by Christina v. Ahlefeldt-Laurvig and Knut Splett-Henning.
Effigy stars Suzan Anbeh, Elisa Thiemann in her first lead role, Christoph Gottschalch, Roland Jankowsky, Uwe Bohm, Marc Ottiker, Marita Marschall, Tom Keidel, Eugen Krössner, Christian Intorp, and many others.

Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It depicts the relationship between an ambitious jazz drumming student (Miles Teller) and an abusive instructor (J. K. Simmons).
Whiplash premiered in competition in the US Dramatic Category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 16, 2014, as the festival's opening film.[4] Sony Pictures Worldwide acquired the international distribution rights.[5] The film opened in limited release domestically in the United States and Canada on October 10, 2014, gradually expanding to over 500 screens and finally closing on March 26, 2015. The film grossed $49 million on a production budget of $3.3 million.
The film received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise for Simmons's performance and Chazelle's screenplay. At the 87th Academy Awards, Whiplash won Best Film Editing (Tom Cross, ACE), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor for Simmons, and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

Check out the Bandersnatch Story Flowchart:
http://thisguyedits.com/bandersnatch
In Bandersnatch, viewers make decisions for the main character, the young programmer Stefan Butler who is adapting a fantasy choose-your-own-adventure novel into a video game in 1984. The film is based on a planned Imagine Software video game of the same name which went unreleased after the company filed for bankruptcy. It also alludes to Lewis Carroll's own works that feature the bandersnatch creature. A piece of science fiction and horror, Bandersnatch incorporates meta-commentary and rumination on free will.
Bandersnatch is presented as an interactive film. A brief tutorial, specific to the device being streamed on, explains to the viewer how to make choices. They have ten seconds to make choices, or a default decision is made. Once a playthrough ends, the viewer is given an option of going back and making a different choice. The average viewing is 90 minutes, though the quickest path ends after 40 minutes. There are 150 minutes of unique footage divided into 250 segments.
