Illusions of progress and their countertrends in Japan I Keibo Oiwa Local Futures 2024-03-29 | Keibo Oiwa is a professor, cultural anthropologist, and a widely respected philosopher and organizer in Japan. He co-authored, with David Suzuki, a book about bottom-up movements for peace, human rights and environmentalism, called ‘The Japan We Never Knew’. He is the founder of The Sloth Club – an NGO that promotes slow and sustainable living. The Sloth Club, coupled with Keibo’s book Slow is Beautiful: Culture as Slowness, have fostered a new appreciation of rural life and a simpler way of living.In this episode, Keibo offers us a portrait of a Japan moving in two different directions. He sounds the alarm about the cultural and spiritual devastation that has been a deeply tragic cost of Japan’s pursuit of globalized development. But he also speaks of a widespread cultural resurgence – a movement towards regeneration, community and nature. An alumnus of Schumacher College, she is the co-founder of EcoUniversidade, a Youth Climate Leaders fellow, a member of the Global Regeneration CoLab network, and a long-time collaborator of Local Futures. She studies and promotes localization and regeneration in Brazil.In this episode, Thais encourages those trapped in the modern world to step beyond its ideological confines. In this episode, radical “unlearner” and rethinker of education, Manish Jain, talks about why we should rethink formal education and strive to unlearn much of what we have been taught through years of schooling. He addresses the need to shift power and the importance of the localization movement in this process. Re-localize Italy, and the world. Local Futures 2023-06-16 | In this powerful message, Italian journalist and writer, Tiziana Alterio, calls for a shift towards localization. Until about 25 years ago, Italy like many countries was still mainly based on local artisanal economies of small-scale farmers and enterprises. The incursion of corporate globalization profoundly undermined these economies and led to today's economic crisis. The multiple crises we face today are not only crises of the neoliberal economic model, but of civilization itself. This crisis point, while disastrous, also presents opportunities to imagine and enact new, more courageous and visionary economic and civilizational possibilities based in feminine principles of cooperation, solidarity and sharing, and based in the re-localization of production and consumption. Such a re-localized economy would not only be more human, but would reduce wealth inequality.

Changing the economy for planetary and social healing Local Futures 2023-05-04 | Film-maker Damon Gameau's hard-hitting documentaries include That Sugar Film, exposing the impacts of sugar on the body and the role of Big Food in making us sick through junk food addiction, and 2040, exploring solutions to the ecological crisis.
