For Autumn/Winter 2005, Stefano Pilati returned to Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche with a more focused and confident collection. He was inspired by a mood of restraint and self-control, looking at seventeenth-century paintings of Jansenist nuns and clergy. This led to clean lines, pressed fabrics, and modest shapes with quiet detail. The show began with strong-shouldered suits inspired by the 1980s, followed by looks influenced by church clothing, like long cardinal coats and high, ruffled collars.
Simple daywear stood out the most, including a fitted black suit with a soft flare at the knee and belted sweaters worn over rounded skirts. Rich fabrics and textured pieces, like patchwork jackets and glossy coats, added depth. For evening, flowing white chiffon gowns and long, buttoned coats brought drama, ending with pleated goddess-style dresses. The collection balanced control and elegance, showing Pilati shaping a new direction for the house.
Yves Saint Laurent (often called YSL) is one of the most iconic French luxury fashion houses in the world. It was founded in 1962 by the legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé in Paris. From the beginning, the brand pushed boundaries with bold, modern designs that mixed art and fashion and broke traditional style rules.
Saint Laurent revolutionized women’s fashion by introducing pieces like “Le Smoking” — the first tailored tuxedo suit for women — and by championing ready-to-wear fashion with his Rive Gauche line, making luxury more accessible. His designs blended masculine and feminine aesthetics and drew inspiration from art, culture, and global dress traditions.
