For Fall 2003, Tom Ford brought strong color and bold glamour back to Saint Laurent. He was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s 1940s-inspired collection from the 1970s, but added a modern twist. The show opened with a jade velvet jacket tied with a ribbon, worn with a soft green skirt and fishnet tights. Bright color pairings like cranberry and red, brown and pale blue, and pink with black gave the collection energy. Fur coats had oversized sleeves, and plastic bows and clear details were added to evening gowns for a playful edge.
The collection kept Ford’s signature sexy style, with sheer dresses, visible lingerie, tight leather pants, and dramatic ruffles. There were flippy skirts, long flowing gowns, and bold styling like red lipstick and vintage-inspired hair. While the show nodded to Saint Laurent’s past, Ford made it feel modern by pushing the looks to be more daring and provocative. The result was colorful, glamorous, and confident.
Yves Saint Laurent (often called YSL) is one of the most iconic French luxury fashion houses in the world. It was founded in 1962 by the legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé in Paris. From the beginning, the brand pushed boundaries with bold, modern designs that mixed art and fashion and broke traditional style rules.
Saint Laurent revolutionized women’s fashion by introducing pieces like “Le Smoking” — the first tailored tuxedo suit for women — and by championing ready-to-wear fashion with his Rive Gauche line, making luxury more accessible. His designs blended masculine and feminine aesthetics and drew inspiration from art, culture, and global dress traditions.
