About the Music
The music is inspired by early eighties dub (like Sly and Robbie), but the tempo is slightly faster, the arrangement is far busier and there is less reverb. In any case, this is where the song's roots lie. I first used a more reggae-sounding drum pattern, but I wanted to move it away from the traditional Jamaican sound. Most of the instruments were recorded using a Korg M50 synthesizer, while the percussion and drum loops and some guitar sounds came from pre-recorded loops from (Sound Pool Collection 14, Sony, Computer Music Magazine).

I played this song on a Korg M50 Synth and recorded it using Sonar Home Studio. I recorded the song during the COIVD-19 pandemic, so I wanted to create something upbeat to chase away the boredom of social isolation.

I shot the video using a Fujifilm X100T, a Sony Nex-7 and an iPhone.

For this trip, we didn't do a lot of activities because Tokyo was in the midst of a record-setting heatwave. We live in Asia and travel to Japan fairly regularly, so in this trip, we didn't go to any of Tokyo's must-see tourist spots, we just went to places that we felt like going to.

Yuigahama Beach
This beach at Sagami Bay is about an hour by train from central Tokyo. It is not a spectacularly beautiful beach, but you can rent surfboards there and get away from the city for while.

teamLab Planets
For me this was the highlight of the trip. teamLab is a collective of artists, musicians, computer programmers and engineers who specialize in creating immersive and interactive light and sound shows. They now have a permanent museum in Tokyo, teamlab Borderless (https://borderless.teamlab.art/), but we went to their recent exhibition at Toyosu: teamLab Planets (https://planets.teamlab.art/tokyo/). Nekobukuro
This was an unplanned visit. While visiting the Tokyu Hands Department store to buy souvenirs, we noticed that there was a cat playground there, so we decided to check it out.

Ueno Park
We went on a Sunday and they had a little flea market there. We also visited one of the temples there (Shinobazunoike Bentendo) but did not stay long because of the heat.

Senso-ji in Asakusa
After visiting Ueno park we went to this large temple complex. That evening was the Sumida Fireworks festival, so a lot of people had taken the opportunity to get dressed up in traditional Japanese attire.

The restaurants
These were chosen by my daughter. A few of them were Ikebukuro—which is a fairly popular shopping district—because our hotel was close by.

I played this song on a Korg M50 Synth. The composition was inspired by all the problems we have been facing during 2020. It has a somewhat sad mood but includes key changes to major keys in order to show a feeling of hope.

Overall the effect is meant to be relaxing, kind of a like a lullaby for our troubled times.

The photos and video were taken in and around Wu Kai Sha—an area in Hong Kong's New Territories where I lived for a couple of years.

The title of the song is the final line from a poem by Emily Dickinson entitled: By the Sea

About the video:
My children and I shot the video footage. This video features Ball Ball, our lovely Pomeranian. We shot the footage last year when he was still a puppy. Now he is quite a bit larger, though he is still quite small. Originally, I had planned to call him Jon Snow of House Pomeranian, but I thought that 'snow' sounded too similar to 'no' and would cause him endless confusion.

I shot the photos of the Osaka skyline as the sun was setting in the summer of 2016. The camera I was using—a Sony NEX-7—doesn't have an automatic timer, but it does have a time delay setting (e.g., the shutter will release a set time after pressing the button), so, in order to take the photos for the time-lapse, I had to press the shutter button for each photo. I had this picture in mind when creating the piece: a wayward traveler stumbles upon a forest fairy and follows her into the ruins of the forgotten forest kingdom; the former glory of the kingdom can still be seen among the statues and columns (the middle, loud part of the music), but eventually even the magical beings (the fairies) abandon the castle and the legend of the forest kingdom fades away into nothing but folklore and memory (as represented by the pianissimo ending)."

a) A music visualizer effect I created in Adobe After Effects using the Music Spectrum effect. I attached that to a circular mask and then animated it further using the Griddle effect. I quite like the final visualizer. It is almost like the graphics are producing the music rather than simply responding to it. The title text was also also animated in After Effects using one of the text animation presets.

About the recording and editing
The video was edited using Adobe Premiere Pro and I recorded the song using Cakewalk’s Sonar Home Studio. I used loops for the more rhythmic parts like drums beats, the main bass line and the funk guitar parts. To create most of the melodies, counter-melodies, arpeggios, other bass lines and harmony parts, I played a Korg M50 synthesizer.

This is a song I have been working on for a while. It started off as an EDM (Electronic Dance Music piece) but morphed into something else during the recording process.

Music Style
This is a gentle and somewhat sad piano song. It is influenced by classical minuets and has the ABA structure and 3/4 time signature associated with that form. However, the arrangement is rather sparse, giving the song a more contemporary feel. As the melody is prominent, the song is more suitable for wordless videos. If used in vlogs, the melody may be distracting.

About the Song
This song is about the end of a friendship. Sometimes friendships simply fade away; sometimes they quickly disintegrate, leaving at least one person one hurt and bewildered. This song is about the second kind of ending and was written after a friendship suddenly fell apart.

Music composition and recording: I recorded this song on Cakewalk's Home Studio. Most of the parts were played on a Korg M50 synthesizer. I also played alto saxophone in one section. The percussion parts were built up from pre-recorded loops.

The song is influenced by some African styles, most notably Juju music. You can hear some of the following elements:
a) Use of a strictly pentatonic scale (meaning there are no Western-music-style chords)
b) An interplay between melodic instruments playing rhythmic lines and pitched percussion instruments. There is not such a clear distinction between rhythm and melody.
c) A song structure that doesn't really on the usual verse, chorus and bridge structure

Of course, there are electronic music influences as well, such as the music in the album by David Byrne and Brian Eno--My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (which is also influenced by African sounds and rhythms).

The first version was done very quickly and is a little too long for an intro, so I always wanted to come back and try a different arrangement.

The photo in the video is of Tolo Harbour and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). I took the photo at dawn last summer on a remarkably clear and still day. The music was played on a Korg Microx Keyboard (a mini 2-ocatve synthesizer and the different parts were mixed using CakeWalk's home studio. About the Song
For this song, I was initially aiming for more of a folk sound, but I liked they way some of the other parts blended with the acoustic guitar so it is sort of an ambient-folk hybrid. It is kind of hypnotic and evokes a feeling of mystery.

About the Video
The video are scenes of a few beaches near where I live (Wu Kai Sha) in Hong Kong. Most of them were taken using a Sony Nex-7 but one was taken with a Digital Harinezumi 2++ toy camera. The black and white effect was created using the Color Correction - Threshold filter ins Adobe Premiere Pro.

In this song, I am going for a Joe Hisaishi (who often composes scores for Hayao Miyazaki) kind of sound. The mood is nostalgic but still a little sweet.

The teddy bears were donated to our school studio by a student a few years ago (maybe she had outgrown them). They occasionally help out by appearing as actors and models in our videos. The photos in this video were mainly shot at the school's Creative Media Studio and English Corner as well as some other places around campus. For this video, the bears also went on an outing to Ma On Shan (in Hong Kong).

The guitar, bass, violin, flute, vibraphone, bells and ney parts were played on a Korg M50 while the drum parts are from loops.

This was my first try at a time lapse video. It was a trial and error kind of experiment. I learned that I should take the photos at shorter time intervals, set the focus manually (so the camera doesn't have to auto-focus before each shutter release) and bring more clothing if I am going to sit by the seaside for such a long time! I quite like the dancing barges towards the end. I will definitely do a longer harbor scene in the future. I had thought about whether I should correct the exposure in the opening sunset part so that the non-sun part of the photo wouldn't be so dark, but I was curious about what would happen once the sun actually set (the sea and sky became much lighter, which was kind of interesting).

Elegy

Another student, after listening to the composition, said that it didn't sound tragic enough for an elegy; however when I was writing the song, I was trying to avoid a heavy, tragic feel. The circumstances were already sad enough, so I wanted to a lighter touch to reflect her cheerful, sweet nature while alive.

Though it is a personal song, I have decided to include it in the background music collection (as a way of spreading her song).

It was created using loops for the drum, percussion, brass and guitar parts (mainly from SoundPool) and with a Korg Micro X for the keyboard and bass parts. It was edited using Sonar Home Studio. Its influences include reggae, rock, jazz and electronic music.

The video shows various street scenes in Hong Kong (Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and the West Kowloon Cultural District). The video was shot with a Digital Harinezumi 2++ (a kind of digital toy camera) and then cartoonified using After Effects CS4.

This loop-based rock instrumental - Rock Funk Beast - is part of a series of royalty-free music tracks created to be used as background music for videos, presentation, slide-shows and animation.

I haven't done a rock song or loop-based song for a while, so I did both for this track. Most of the drum, bass and guitar loops are from the Computer Music Magazine CD (issue #151). The guitar solo loops are from SoundPool and there are a couple of other loops from other collections. The loops were edited and assembled using Sonar Home Studio. The visuals were produced in After Effects using the CC Kaleida filter.
