In the Woodcutters Village, Adol learns that the forest is at the moment overrun with fierce monsters. Returning to the juncture to the village, the traveler Halta is there begging Tez to let him pass so he can deliver the Camelia Bud to Faye, a sick child at an Inn in the marshland. Adol escorts Halta to Master Rod in the village, who volunteers himself to deliver the Camelia Bud.
Adol follows Rod to assist, but quickly finds the lumberjack worn down by the monsters on the way to the marsh. He entrusts the Camelia Bud to Adol, who promptly delivers the medicine. Adol discovers the marshland cave while in the area but finds it sealed shut. It isn't until returning to the Inn that Faye tells Adol of a message she received from the Water Spirit while sleeping, finally giving him the method of entering the cave to retrieve the Water Crystal.

Gouf is goofy.
BC (hold C) lets Gouf hang from the plane with the heat rod. Basically this uses AC to heat rod to the ground and put Gouf at an angle where using BC will make the plane spawn near the ground. Gouf swings to hang from the plane and gets a lot of momentum during swinging to adjust under the plane.
You can begin to ascend with boost as soon as the plane is destroyed, so depending on how low you spawn the plane will determine when Gouf releases the heat rod after the plane explodes. If this happens during the forward or backward arc of the swing then Gouf will go flyyyyying as long as you hold down C. Forward momentum seems a bit more drastic than backwards, but I may have initially been holding forward which makes it seem that way. Backward also seems much easier to pull off.
