SOME POST-PUBLICATION NOTES:
*an artist like Kendrick can still sometimes have really incisive social commentary in his music, like fighting transphobia on 'auntie diaries.' but also, fans of his that are more radical, anti-capitalist, pro-Palestine etc. might feel disappointed that he hasn't moved in that direction. so the choice is not to say 'what he does is now irrelevant,' it might be to say 'i have changed my expectations of him.' i hope folks don't misconstrue me when i use phrases like 'i like that one little thing you do,' i have no intentions of diminishing the impact of great artists, especially black artists and artists of marginalized background that represent oppressed people in some way
*they do, in fact, do democracy in china of a certain kind (according to the european-led democracy perception index for instance), it just isn't the same way we do it here and i'm not so knowledgeable on the nuances.
