The internet, as you know it will be gone forever in a matter of weeks. On July 25 2025, the Online safety Act (OSA) was passed in the United Kingdom’s Parliament requiring all users to prove they are an adult to access any popular websites. In theory, this law is meant to protect children from harmful or adult content, but in practice your privacy and your favorite sites will be gone, or at the very least ruthlessly altered, whether you live in the UK or not. Failing to comply with this law can result in up to 18m in fines or a total ban from the country, something no big website wants. But never failing to take advantage of an tragedy, companies like Twitter, Spotify, and even Discord are eagerly preparing to use this dystopian opportunity as a dinner bell to feast on even more of your data including your name, face, address, date of birth and even biometric data. How they accomplish this is different from company to company, but most are implementing verification systems or requiring government issued ID before using anything on their sites. Even if you seek shelter from this nuclear blast of privacy violation by using VPNs or alternate sites, you will still feel the fallout as your friend groups shrink and online content devolves into something we can’t even predict yet. Even now, YouTube is monitoring you using a new AI system to determine if you are an adult or not. They are measuring how engaging with this video, what you are writing in the comments, what videos you will watch next as well as much more to determine if you need to be flagged as a child and asked for your ID. People are, understandably, upset as this not only is a massive overreach into the role of parents but also “the real-time destruction of the internet as we know it” according to experts in online law. However, something strange is happening with how YouTube is implementing its compliance with this new law. YouTube may secretly be on our side with this and is likely protecting you from the consequences of this law despite what outrage you are seeing is saying otherwise.
