YouTube removed my latest documentary, The Games That Shocked the 80s, for violating its nudity and sexual content policy.
The video was a 22-minute historical look at three controversial games from the 1980s — Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, Game Over and Paradise Café — explaining the games, their advertising, their artwork and why they caused controversy at the time.
There was context. There was narration. There was history.
I appealed the decision. A human reviewer watched the video and upheld the removal.
I then contacted YouTube Creator Support, who were polite and helpful, but ultimately couldn't tell me which specific image, scene or moment in the documentary crossed the line.
And that's what bothers me most.
If creators are expected to follow the rules, we need to understand how those rules are actually being applied — particularly when dealing with historical, documentary and contextualised material.
In this video, I explain exactly what happened, why I strongly disagree with YouTube's decision, and why I think this raises a much bigger question about documenting video game history on the platform.
