This session presented a new educational platform designed to enable global youth to develop AI and tech-based environmental solutions.
Climate change was expected to accelerate, increasing climate anxiety among youth. According to the World Meteorological Organization, natural disasters had increased by 500% in the past 50 years. Various surveys of global youth indicated that 75% of teens were worried about their future due to the impacts of climate change, and 84% believed it needed to be addressed and wanted to be part of the solution. A recent global survey showed that, on average, 45% of teens felt that climate anxiety impacted their functioning. However, a very small percentage were actually engaged in developing solutions. The presenters believed this was due to inadequate existing educational paradigms and resources, particularly in underserved communities. Some level of scientific and technology education was necessary for developing solutions, yet existing resources were either too shallow (e.g., Instagram Reels, YouTube shorts) or too detailed and cumbersome (e.g., textbooks, after-school programs), making them unviable for a significant percentage of global youth.
To address this, they created a nonprofit offering a pragmatic and engaging approach to educating youth. They provided a targeted technology platform to help youth get started on developing solutions for environmental problems they were passionate about. Their educational solutions offered a "medium" level of detail to address the outlined problems. Specifically, they provided a ready-to-use hardware platform with a variety of environmental sensors already attached, along with the capability to easily add additional sensors. They also offered open-source software, making it simple for youth with zero previous experience to focus on developing solutions rather than navigating the difficulties of traditional tech education. All resources were provided free of cost due to a grant received to promote their educational nonprofit.
In this presentation, they provided an overview of the status quo and why it was not working, especially for youth with minimal access to resources. They detailed their three educational modules: platform, software, and AI, showing how youth could leverage them step-by-step, starting from when they first faced an environmental challenge they cared about and were seeking to solve. They reviewed examples of teenagers with no tech background leveraging the platform to develop various environmental solutions. The key was to engage and enable a global audience of youth to become part of the solution. They believed this approach could help youth address their climate anxiety, support their educational and professional aspirations, and make a meaningful impact on global climate challenges.
