We were very fortunate to have Josephine Becker, climate justice activist and organizer; Kevin J. Patel, Founder and Executive Director of OneUpAction; and Leslie Davenport, climate psychology consultant and psychotherapist join us for our October 2021 Take Action event Youth Rising: The Next Generation of Climate Leaders and How We Can Help.
During the event, we discussed how young activists are stepping up to tackle the climate emergency, what would-be activists can meaningfully do in their own lives, and how young people can build their emotional resilience to face this existential threat.
PANELIST BIOS
Josephine Becker is an organizer, activist, and co-host of the YIKES Podcast which focuses on climate justice, anti-oppression, and activism. She earned her BSc in Environmental Science and MSc in Sustainability and Behavior Change from the Centre for Alternative Technology in Scotland. She recently moved to Spain to start her PhD, which focuses on post-growth organizations, specifically grassroots collectives and post-capitalist feminist political ecology. On her blog @treesnpeace, she expands on these topics.
Kevin J. Patel has fought as an intersectional climate justice activist from Los Angeles, CA for the past ten years. In 2019, Kevin founded OneUpAction, an organization that supports and empowers marginalized youth by providing them with the resources they need to be change-makers. Kevin has created the first-of-its-kind Youth Climate Commission in LA County to amplify youth voices on the climate crisis. Kevin is a UN Togetherband Ambassador for Goal 7, 13, & 14, he is a National Geographic Young Explorer. He also serves on the Youthtopia World: Circle of Youth Council, the Intersectional Environmentalist Council, and the ClimatePower Creative Advisory Board. Kevin is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in Political Science at Loyola Marymount University.
Leslie Davenport is a psychotherapist who specializes in interdisciplinary dialogues that advance creative and effective solutions to climate change. She’s a founding member of the Institute for Health and Healing, one of the U.S.’s first and largest hospital-based integrative medicine programs and her extensive clinical and teaching experience have fed into her climate psychology model. She’s the author of a number of books, including All the Feelings Under the Sun: How to Deal With Climate Change a timely, thoughtful workbook that will help young readers work through their feelings of anxiety about climate change.
