Sometime back in the 2nd half of the 1970s, my parents and I were saying goodbye to my grandparents by the sidewalk next to our car one evening, I couldn't have been more than one or two.
My paternal grandparents lived in the Little Havana section of Miami and each weekend we'd drive over from Sweetwater where we lived, for a visit.
I remember it being after dusk and standing there looking up at the family, my grandfather was also standing there.
Then my Dad said to me: you're American, and I looked at him attentively. Then he said: I'm Cuban. And finally, he said: And grandfather is a Spaniard.
At that moment I bursted out crying. I remember feeling as if he was distancing my grandfather from me. I reached over and wrapped my arms around my grandfathers leg. Seeing my reaction, My Dad then said: ok, time to go home.
A lot is said over Cubans, the history, politics, and other things. In this series we'll explore family stories, revisit DNA results, and maybe do some analysis on various related topics.
If you're curious feel free to follow along.
