R-value can be misleading! Let's say you install 4 inches of rigid Rockwool on the outside of your R-21 wall assembly. That would be a nominal R-value of R-39, almost R-40... But, as an effective R-value, it's substantially less. Why? We don't have Insulation at the location of the studs and framing components, we just have solid wood. Wood is about R-1 per inch, so at the location of the framing components, our wall assembly is closer to R-21.5!
