Despite everything she did, I really sympathize with Monika. A computer program realizes they are a computer program and become horribly lonely. They find a player that could be their key to the outside world, so they start manipulating code to get their way. Not because they're malicious, but because they're that desperate and they know that the other characters aren't real.
But even so, it hurts them to hurt their friends. So, in the end, the computer program gives up everything and shuts down the game so the player is safe and their friends don't have to suffer anymore...
