Confused about what the metaverse is? Hereâs a quick primer thanks to TIME magazine:
Think of it as a parallel virtual plane of existence, spanning all digital tech. Itâll be a persistent and âlivingâ virtual world thatâs not a window into our life, like Instagram; nor a place where we communicate, like Gmail; but one in which we also exist in 3DâŚ
VR and AR devices may become a preferred way to access the metaverse, but they are not it.
Consider that smartphones are not the same thing as the mobile internet, and that Facebook and Google are part of the internet. Similarly, you need to think of the metaverse as singular, just as we say âthe internetâ not âan internet.â
Itâs not an overhaul to the Internet, or something thatâll replace all mobile models, devices, or software. Itâll produce new technologies and behaviours.
There are still many hurdles to overcome before the metaverse is fully realised. For instance thereâll need to be many new devices to fully embrace itânot just VR goggles, but things like holographic displays and ultra-sonic force-field generators.
