Former Cambridge bioengineer and European Space Agency designer challenges the popular "bad design" argument used against human anatomy. Drawing from nearly 30 years of research in biomechanics and spacecraft design, he compares world-record human engineering—such as ultra-low-friction Olympic bicycle transmissions—with human joints. His findings reveal that biological joints are 50 times less friction-prone, vastly more compact, and engineered to last into an individual's 80s or 90s, with common joint failures resulting from disease or misuse rather than structural design flaws.
