How to worldbuild a wilderness hex crawl that starves your party: X1 Isle of Dread (1981) isn't a dinosaur showcase — it's a worldbuilding and wilderness exploration survival economy. This fantasy map making breakdown covers 5gp guides, 1gp bearers, and why Wandering Monster Table 3 saves the T. rex for north of the river.

X1: The Isle of Dread (1981) isn't a dinosaur showcase — it's a wilderness survival economy with the tracking stripped out, and the module tells you so on page one.

Cook and Moldvay priced native guides at 5gp a trip and bearers at 1gp each on page 8 of X1 — cheap enough for any starting party to hire full support before they've left the trailhead. Then the module pulls the support away: bearers refuse to cross the tar pits without a 30-fighter escort, and the natives won't leave the main trail at all. Past that line, the party carries its own load.

The three Wilderness Wandering Monster Tables aren't interchangeable either. Table 1 covers the peninsula near the wall — no dinosaurs. Table 2 starts south of the central river with cave bears and mastodons. Table 3, north of the river, is where the allosaurus, triceratops, and T. rex live. Difficulty is gated by distance from support, and the letter from survivor Rory Barbarosa — printed in the module itself — makes the same point before a single die is rolled: he didn't lose the expedition to a monster, he lost it to a body count.

The guide/bearer costs, the three wandering monster tables, and Rory Barbarosa's letter are all pulled directly from the module. Purify Food and Water and the standard/iron rations weights are verified against the D&D Expert Set rulebook itself (Cook & Marsh, TSR, 1981) — Umlat's spell is a real first-level cleric spell in the actual rules, not a module-only invention.
