When I heard that my parents were going to have this maple tree taken down, I told them that I would handle the removal so I could saw the trunk into slabs. I arrived with two 36" chains, both brand new, and one of them an Oregon ripping chain. Before I started, I commented to my brother that I remembered putting nails into some of the trees in the backyard when I was younger, but couldn't remember which ones. Now I know that this was definitely one of those trees. So, for all of the younger woodworkers out there, don't put nails in trees at your parents house. For everyone else, don't procrastinate buying a metal-detector wand. I'm going online to buy one now.
