The Georgia trial court judge wrongfully, in my opinion, tried to hold Young Thug's defense lawyer for refusing to disclose how he learned about the ex parte communications the judge apparently held with prosecutors, a sworn witness, and others. The defense was not part of that meeting with the judge in chambers. This is not allowed. The lawyer did what lawyers do: he immediately appealed, and the Georgia Supreme Court "stayed" (delayed) any jail sentence. The contempt citation is a criminal offense, and a big deal for a lawyer to get hit with. It's also exceedingly rare. I think the judge made a big mistake here. He also called the ex parte communications "private" and "proprietary," when they are neither. The court is not allowed to have "secret" meetings with one side over the other. I included a Georgia statute that prohibits it too. This is the rule in California, where I am licensed. This is not legal advice, but just observations on a public issue.
