From the research I've gathered and asking my rock collector neighbor, the best rocks to use for a fire pit are 'hard' rocks. Granite, Marble, Slate. Don't use 'soft' rocks. That is, rocks that when rubbed together start to shed material: Limestone, Sandstone, Pumice. Don't use rocks that have been in water
