People often tell former Christians, “You were never really saved” or “You were never a true Christian.”
In this video, I explain why that argument does not honestly account for my life. I believed Jesus was Lord, trusted him for salvation, prayed constantly, worshiped, evangelized, studied doctrine, attended Bible college, and planned to become a pastor. I was not pretending. I genuinely believed.
I also examine the biblical debate over whether true believers can fall away, the problem this creates for Christian assurance, and the contradiction between saying only God creates lasting faith while blaming people when that faith does not last.
Christians are welcome to disagree with why I left. But saying I was never a Christian does not answer my reasons. It simply rewrites my past to protect a theology from being challenged. As I argue in the video, I did not leave because Christianity meant nothing to me. I left because it mattered enough that I needed to know whether it was true.
