Are we helpless victims of circumstance, or do our choices determine who we become?

Judaism teaches a powerful balance between fate and freedom. Many aspects of life are beyond our control, but the most important decisions remain in our hands. The Talmud captures this idea in a famous teaching: “Everything is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven.”

In other words, while circumstances may shape the conditions of our lives, our moral decisions, the choices we make about right and wrong, are always ours.

In this short insight, Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein explains how personal responsibility and moral choice lie at the heart of human freedom.

Part of a short series exploring free choice, personal agency, and the power each person has to shape their destiny.
