A lot of writing advice is given in the form of 'rules', and they tend to be restrictive as well as prescriptive. They also tend to be short. Afterall, they are the final synopsis of much more complicated concepts and rationales.

Narrative theory (amongst others) gives us an understanding of what the rule is commenting on, why it was established, and can help give us ideas about how to circumvent the rule, because rules in writing are always governed by, and responding to, effects created, impacts on readers, and the context in which the writing is being deployed.

So this is a short video about the rule 'Never open a story with a dream sequence' and one way of thinking about it to understand the 'why' the rule exists, how it applies to more than dreams, and some minor suggestions about the context and theory behind the rule.
