In this video I attempt to diagnose and fix a 'growling noise' issue I'm having with my 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4x4. The issue, a growling or grinding noise, seems to be radiating throughout the vehicle and is hard to pinpoint. The way I was able to locate the noise was by putting the Suburban up on jack stands. With all four wheels off the ground, on jack stands, I was able to very carefully put the vehicle in drive and let the tires spin. Once I did this it was very apparent that the noise was coming from the rear end. More specifically, coming from the passenger side of the rear end. With this diagnosis process I was able to determine that the outboard axle bearing, on the passenger side, needed to be replaced.
To replace the outboard rear axle bearings there are a couple of specialized tools needed. Thankfully I was able to rent these tools from my local auto parts store which, in the end, doesn't cost a thing. With the help of rental tools, the bearing pullers and slide hammer, I was able to quickly and efficiently remove the bearing(s). Actually, I replaced both the passenger and driver side bearings.
Another thing of note, which is completely obvious, is that in order to replace these bearings I had to also replace the axle tube seals. This can be somewhat of a common issue with these vehicles and although mine were not leaking at this time, with over 126k miles they were bound to start leaking soon. The point here is I'm tackling multiple issues at one time with this bearing replacement. Another point to make here is that, of course, by doing this job I had to drain and refill the rear axle fluid and so there's another preventative maintenance item that was accomplished.
In this video I note, after putting everything back together, and the vehicle still up on jack stands, that the sound at the rear passenger side tire seemed to still be there. However, when I took the vehicle on a drive I noticed that the sounds and vibrations I was experiencing before the job did indeed seem to be gone after. I will also say that the vehicle is in need of a professional alignment as well.
Now, after everything is done and the vehicle has been driven around for a while, I can confidently say that it definitely drives smoother and sounds better. There is still some tire noise, which I suspect to be a previous alignment issue, but I'm hoping that will go away after an alignment and some driving.
