This is something that John Dominic Crossan talks about and why he even prefers using the word “matrix” instead of “context”. Because when we talk about this stuff it isn’t just interesting facts or cool background info. It’s absolutely necessary to understanding who Jesus was, what he was doing, and what his message was. This was really important to me when I wrote my book, The God Who Riots, and this is the way I went about, as the subtitle of the book says, “taking back the radical Jesus”.
