Most of us like to do things that we feel we're good at. I'm not good at art, But maybe you are!
A lot of the fun in the challenge of making a game comes
from needing to do things outside of your comfort zone.
I am super comfortable programming. I'm not GOOD at it, but I like doing it and it feels good...most of the time...to do.
I like making things. If you've ever thought about making a game, then you probably like making things too. I know it's easy to look at all the difficult things you don't know how to do that you know are necessary to make a game.. and just kind of get lost.
You have to do everything in your power to push through that and make something. Anything. Open up whatever software you've chosen (and if you haven't chosen one already, just pick Unity), and make the tiniest, smallest idea you can possibly imagine. You're gonna be forced to learn
more than you expect and it will be even more rewarding than you imagine.
There will be times where you spend hours working on something really small, only to realize you have to redo it completely because you did it wrong from the beginning. There will be times when you realize that the big idea you have that you're super passionate about...just aren't possible to do right now.
I'd be lying if I said those aren't super low moments in the journey. They definitely can be. But the reward on the otherside - the knowledge that you've pushed through mental barriers and you've accomplished something less than 1% of people in the world do...
It's worth it.
Don't try to make a successful game, don't try to make a complete remake of your favorite game. But I encourage you with open arms to start TODAY. Start with what you're good at and copy and paste and download resources for what you are NOT good at. Do not make excuses. Stop being just a consumer of content - and start making some.
