Graphic footage from the murders of Renee Goode and Alex Pretti in Minnesota earlier this year set off a wave of nationwide protests against ICE. And yet, no such footage exists of the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, two of the latest victims of ICE-related violence. In an interview, Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida said what we're all thinking: it feels increasingly dangerous to try and hold these agents accountable.
Enter: The Right To Record Act. Introduced by Frost, the act aims to combat the Trump administration's strategy of emboldening police and ICE agents in order to dissuade victims and protestors from speaking up. The bill would strengthen first amendment protections and introduce financial consequences, and supersede qualified immunity. The hope being that, through this bill and community action, we can permanently dampen ICE's power to terrorize our communities.
