You Christian brothers, together,
Come hear a truthful song,
Full highly praised names,
Which are related of God’s Son;
The Scriptures search as the Spirit leads,
So to confess and in truth own,
That which was from beginning is He.
In the first place, will you notice,
How Christ is the Word of God,
Through whom the Father worked,
As from the beginning we’re taught;
When God created the heavens and earth,
This Word with God was in concord,
One with the Father as one.
We own according to Scripture,
He that hath ears let him hear,
That from eternity He is sure;
Who of His birth can speak clear?
He only God's image does assure,
The radiance of His glory,
A reflection of His being, pure.
Out of the mouth of th' Almighty,
Is the Word from eternity,
And the Word with God was in unity,
The Word was God, John did see;
He the great wisdom of God ever is,
Born from th' eternal Father,
To redeem us from death - thus through His.
This Rod in Zion was firmly set,
As planted of the Lord well,
High, noble, above all prophets,
The righteous Emmanuel.
He is the Word of true righteousness,
A true and rightful Prince of Peace,
As Isaiah does say and confess.
This Son most worthy and honorable,
Who in Godly form was still,
Did there Himself thus abase, humble,
Foll'wing His own Father's will,
He on Himself took a servant's form,
That in example, He bid us,
His footsteps to follow, conform.
All the more that here is written,
Of this Son most excellent,
Confess, we too, in addition,
The Old and New Testament;
He God is over all eternally,
In his own letter to the Romans,
Has Paul this explained carefully.
This, then, I have not regretted,
Thus to have written this song,
For my dear, true fellow - comrades,
This out of love to prolong;
So take the best of this short song,
Should one of Christ all be telling,
My song then should be far too long.
