"Everyone" says it's so hard to start and you have to wear motocross boots to keep from damaging yourself. Here is evidence this is not true. When properly tuned with a good carb, it doesn't kick at all, and just starts.
The original Honda carb is ok but finicky, and I replaced it with a Mikuni TM40 pumper configured by XRsonly.com. They did a great job, and offered good support. It starts much better now and has a nice jump off idle.
