TEDx Talks | You are what you speak | Lana Kulas | TEDxYouth@HuiliShanghai @TEDx | Uploaded 6 days ago | Updated 1 day ago
This talk explores attitudes towards terms such as first language and native speaker and considers whether we sometimes place more emphasis on the way something is said rather than what is said. It also asks whether accents are important and what they may say about us and our attitudes as a society. Speaking multiple languages, in whatever accent, should be celebrated for the diversity it brings to our experience. #SitDownSports #YOLO

Lana Kulas is Second Master at Huili Shanghai and has been at Huili for 4 years. She is originally from Bosnia, moved to England when she was 9 and has since lived and worked in Qatar and China. In her spare time, she is a keen rower, traveller, reader and finance enthusiast. Once upon a time, she was also a rugby player until one broken bone too many made her fully committed to sit down only sports. She helps to run a charity that works with disadvantaged children in Bosnia and campaigns for better support and living conditions for children leaving care and those with special needs. She hopes to one day work out what she wants to do when she grows up. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
