“You shall afflict your being.” YaHuWaH doesn’t say it once, He repeats it. This is a day of full submission, reflection, and repentance.
On Yom Ha’Kippurim, you are commanded to:
Afflict your being (Hebrew: anah – humble, weaken, bring low)
Bring an offering made by fire
Do no work at all
Keep this command forever, throughout all generations
The word Kaphar (כָּפַר) means to cover, ransom, or apply pitch, like Noah sealed the ark. This is where atonement comes from: a complete covering from judgment.
Torah says:
“Any being who is not afflicted shall be cut off.”
“Any being who does any work shall be destroyed from among his people.”
This is a Shabbat Shabbaton, a complete, model Sabbath. The highest sabbath of the year.
This command is forever. As long as the sun, moon, and stars endure, so does this ordinance. (Jeremiah 31:35–36)
