A good rule of thumb is to NOT do this while building a PC
Another 50 series graphics card just burst into flames, but it’s not for the reason you’d expect - that’s right, we’re talking about ~USER ERROR~
Rather than the 16 pin connector melting on this 5070 card, it was actually the passive dual-8-pin splitter connecting the adapter to the power supply
The thing’s all kinds of melted and fricked up now - and that’s because it was an aftermarket dongle that effectively got overloaded with power draw by not being split between two separately sourced PCIe ports
This is just one of the reasons you should only ever be using the power cables that COME with your power supply, and while the GPU may still be functional, this could’ve gone significantly worse
