Yggdrasil is the great world tree in Norse mythology, standing at the center of the cosmos and holding all nine realms within its branches and roots. It is an eternal ash tree that connects gods, humans, giants, and the dead, and if Yggdrasil were to fall, all worlds would collapse with it.
In this video, we explore what Yggdrasil is, what its name means, and why it is closely connected to Odin. We look at the myth of Odin hanging on the tree for nine nights to gain knowledge of the runes, and how Yggdrasil functions as both a symbol of life, sacrifice, and cosmic balance.
The video explains the three great roots of Yggdrasil and the wells connected to them: Hvergelmir in Niflheim, Mimir’s Well in Jotunheim, and the Well of Urðr in Asgard. We also cover the many beings that live on and around the tree, including the dragon Níðhöggr, the squirrel Ratatoskr, the eagle and hawk at the top, the four stags, and the animals of Valhalla.
We also examine the role of the Norns, the daily care of the tree, and Yggdrasil’s role during Ragnarök, including how it shelters the last two humans, Líf and Lífþrasir.
