On April 19, 2022, at approximately 12:57 AM, Deputy J.W. Stevens of the Gordon County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a high-speed pursuit initiated by the Ringgold Police Department on Interstate-75.
As he staged at mile marker 315, he joined the chase and quickly took the lead. With the suspect driving recklessly at speeds of 110-115 mph, Deputy Stevens executed a successful Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver near mile marker 311, causing the suspect's vehicle to crash off the roadway. During a felony stop, the suspect emerged from the vehicle and appeared to reach for a weapon, prompting Deputy Stevens to discharge his firearm in self-defense. The incident, which resulted in the suspect being struck, was recorded by Deputy Stevens' body-worn camera and subsequently handed over to the GBI for investigation.
