In a Dallas courtroom today the rapper Yella Beezy and his defense presented to the judge their argument at the pre-trial hearing. The prosecution is wanting Yella Beezy's music to be used against him — and also Trapboy Freddy's name came up on both sides. The defense pushed back hard, arguing Yella Beezy is an independent artist, not the head of a criminal organization, and that the State never showed he directed anyone's actions. Counsel pointed out that individuals repeatedly named by prosecutors — including Trapboy Freddy — have never actually been charged as co-conspirators, and argued the case is built on guilt by association rather than direct evidence. The defense also challenged whether Det. Eric Barnes has the expertise to interpret rap lyrics as evidence at all, and argued the songs are protected artistic expression, not confessions.
The State fired back that this isn't about criminalizing rap music — it's about motive.
Key facts:
Case: State of Texas v. Markies Conway (Yella Beezy) — capital murder, Mo3 case
Disputed evidence: rap lyrics, Instagram Live activity, digital communications
Trapboy Freddy: named repeatedly by prosecutors, not charged as a co-conspirator
