This video explains how when France entered the war, Britain had to rethink its strategy to counter threats against its islands in the Caribbean–this situation was exacerbated by the alliance between France and Spain. Protecting ports in Georgia and the Carolinas was more important in British eyes than protecting the sugar islands, until Grenada fell to d’Estaing’s fleet in 1778 (as the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, made up of 500 free Haitians, supported French and American forces in their battle for Savannah).
The Year in Revolution Series was produced with classroom use in mind. Beginning with 1775 and ending with 1783, students and lifelong learners alike will learn about each year of the Revolution through a comprehensive overview video and five “who, what, where, when, and how” videos. The animated series draws heavily from the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati’s library and museum collections.
