The Yamaha Stage Custom features all-birch shells, which deliver excellent projection, punchy lows, articulate mids and sparkling highs. In addition, each shell offers rounded bearing edges that increase the contact area between the shell and the drum head to optimize resonance and sustain. Gig-ready hardware includes Yamaha’s YESS tom-mounting system (minimal contact with shell increases drum tone) and Absolute lugs (keeps tension rods from loosening). The configuration of the Stage Custom is 22" bass drum, 10" and 12" rack toms, 14" and 16" floor toms and a matching 5.5" x 14" snare.

“I’ve played on hundreds of Yamaha kits, and I’ve never met one I didn’t like,” says Nikki Glaspie (Beyoncé, Maceo Parker, Mike Dillon & Punkadelic). “I’m always able to find a tone that agrees with me, and I love the mounting system. I’m very short, and I have to be able to get the drums in a place where I can reach them, get the angles I need, and play the way I want. Also, what’s great about this specific 6-shell configuration is there’s an additional floor tom. For someone like me, who plays a lot of different styles, it’s like I have two or three kits in one. If I’m playing bebop, I would just play the 10" and 14" toms. If I’m playing classic rock and need something thud-y, I’d use the 12" and 16". If I’m playing fusion, I’d use all the drums.

“The silky blue finish is exclusive to Guitar Center, and it is gorgeous. The way I look at drum finishes is they’re just like clothing. You have a certain swagger if you’re wearing clothes you feel good in. It’s the same with drums. When I walk up to a beautiful kit, it inspires me to play.”
