What happens if you totally transform a town? This suburb was dominated by modernist urbanism and was transformed by introducing traditional, mixed use urban fabric, beautiful architecture inspired by its local traditions, a lot of green and a more balanced housing supply.
In this video you'll hear everything about Le Plessis-Robinson, a town in the suburbs of Paris, and how it was completely transformed - and I'll give 7 lessons of how this town did it.

In this video we discover the dark, untold history of Modernism - the ideology that took over architecture in the 20th century. We look at the shocking plans of Le Corbusier to demolish large parts of central Paris to replace it with highrise towers and highways, to the Bauhaus and one of its strange teachers, to the many movements that started it all. Is this kind of architecture really the future? Let’s find out!

Is traditional architecture really too expensive? Or is there indeed a way to build beautiful buildings affordably? In this video, we do a deep dive into what drives building costs from a first-principles approach, from design elements like symmetry to added elements like ornament. We also look at the cost of modernist architecture, and we answer some deeper questions: even if we would spend more on a building, would that be worth it? Find out all about it in this video!

Want to learn more about Christopher Alexander's teachings? Visit Building Beauty: buildingbeauty.org
---- Christopher Alexander, architect and mathematician, set out on a bold mission: to unlock the timeless principles behind beauty, authenticity, and humane design. In this video, I travel to California to explore his legacy, meet those who worked with him, and visit multiple of his projects—the Sala House in Berkeley, the Vineyard farmers market in Fresno and Julien Inn in San José. Through Alexander’s revolutionary ideas like A Pattern Language and The Nature of Order, he challenged modernist orthodoxy and offered a radically human alternative to the lifeless cities of today.
Though largely dismissed by the mainstream architectural world, his work found surprising influence in software development and continues to inspire a global movement of architects, urbanists, and designers. This video dives into his most powerful insights, explores how they can still shape our world, and shows why Christopher Alexander might be one of the most important thinkers you've never heard of.

I wasn’t planning on making this video. On a sunny afternoon I took my bike for a spin to Muiden to shoot some footage, but on the way back decided to take a detour and visit Weespersluis - a new neighborhood that is part of Weesp, a beautiful, small medieval city just outside of Amsterdam. I knew about this development, as I had visited it during the very first stages of construction, and read about it on a blog post by Mieke Bosse and Paul Dijkman on the INTBAU the Netherlands website. But other than that, I had no idea what to expect. So when I arrived, I wasn’t prepared to find some very well executed streets, interesting architecture and details I absolutely loved!
I decided to make a video about it on the spot, so I filmed, returned the next day to film the surroundings, and returned one extra time to film even more of this neighborhood.
Although it is an expensive place to live, it has affordable housing too which is executed very well - and the urban design and the details are truly what stands out, and what we should learn from. Please share this video if you found it interesting - and let me know what you think in the comments!

In Utrecht a new plan is being developed for 6000 homes in the so-called Merwedekanaalzone. When finished, it will be one of the most dense neighborhoods. But will it be livable, and beautiful?
With a traditional architecture summer school in Utrecht, 'Let's Build a Beautiful City', we let students redesign this plan while keeping the traditional Utrecht architecture and urban fabric in mind. And the result makes us wonder: wat is the best way to design new neighborhoods?
The Utrecht school is only one of the many summer programs out there. Find more information on various programs in the link above.

Inspired by Potsdam's revival? Join for tours and talks in the city itself to explore the future of livable architecture at the 62nd IMCL Conference (October 15-18, 2025): https://www.imcl.online/potsdam-2025

Potsdam was once a shadow of its former self—a city scarred by war and Soviet-era concrete. But today, it’s absolutely glorious. Thanks to the determination of locals and a very generous donation, the heart of Potsdam has been transformed into a beautiful, lively place that rivals its 18th-century splendor.
In this video, I traveled to Potsdam to see how they pulled off such an ambitious reconstruction. We spoke to a developer, an architect, and a local activist to understand how they made it happen. Along the way, we uncover five key lessons from Potsdam’s transformation—and why building beautiful places matters now more than ever. Let’s dive in.

For thousands of years, we used natural stone to create the most incredible and long lasting architecture. But then, suddenly, we stopped using stone. Why?In this video, we do a deep dive in this beautiful, wonderful material. We interview the commercial director at Carrières du Hainaut, John Vis, and Pierre Bidaud from the Stonemasonry Company in London. The biggest question is: can we still build with stone today? Is it feasible, and what are the benefits of using stone? Are there any drawbacks? And most of all: is it too expensive, or can it be affordable?Subscribe to The Aesthetic City and join our mission to make our cities and buildings more beautiful, livable and long lasting.

In this video we do a deep dive in the city of Dubai, one of the world’s most controversial cities.
The main question of this video: can this massive city… sustain? With massive resource consumption, environmental pressures, and an insistence on building skyscrapers by a who’s who of international starchitects, is Dubai heading for trouble?
In this video, we dive into whether the city is doomed or not and share insights on how it could turn things around with smarter urban design. We’ll look at how traditional architecture might actually hold the key to saving the city, plus ideas on fixing its car-heavy transport system. And let’s not forget Dubai’s reliance on international trade networks and supply chains, which leaves it vulnerable—making Dubai a bit of a mirror for the challenges our own society faces.

Instead of accepting this fact, it is debated, or worse: ignored. No longer: more and more people are fed up and joining movements like the Architectural Uprising - because people crave for beauty more than ever. In this video we dive into architectural education. What architects learn in school largely influences what they will do later in the field. And as we all know, we face a crisis in our cities with buildings that are increasingly ugly, inhumane and alienating. The disconnect between what architects design and what our populations want, and our society needs, is an urgent issue.
In this video we look at how architectural education used to be, how it is now, what the problems are, but also look at hopeful developments that are taking place all over the world. Because a true renaissance is coming in architecture education, as multiple schools start teaching the lost arts of building again.
We hear stories of multiple students and visit universities in the US to see how we could move architecture towards a better future. Not only that and as always we’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!

👉 In this video we discover Brandevoort, a newly built town near Helmond, the Netherlands. Brandevoort consists of multiple parts, of which the central area, called ‘De Veste’ is inspired by fortified towns as they can be found in the province of Brabant. This town is dense and walkable, yet peaceful and surrounded by a stunning green landscape. It was also a commercial success, with many of the phases selling out with ease. Could this town be an example for developments in other countries, like the United States, England or other places? The future, second phase of Brandevoort isn’t secured however; a bold, futuristic plan is proposed that does away with the time tested, successful principles that led to earlier success. In this video you’ll hear all about this town, and as always we’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!

Why We Should Revive Traditional Architecture & Urbanism
In this video, we explore the often-misunderstood concept of traditional architecture and urbanism, and its relevance in today's fast-paced society. Discover how tradition is not just about mimicking the past because of nostalgic feelings, but rather an adaptive process that incorporates local conditions and innovations for a harmonious end result. Can we still build like we used to, before the era of modernism? To find the answer, we'll delve into remarkable examples such as Cayalá, Poundbury, Brandevoort, Le Plessis Robinson, Heulebrug, and more. Join us on this architectural journey, and you might just find a renewed appreciation for tradition and its place in our modern world.

EJXBUC7Z2G0C3ENR - things stranger thanBrainwashing at Architecture School? - with Robert AdamThe Aesthetic City2022-12-30 | In this video, Robert Adam tells about his experiences at architecture college back in the early 70's. Have times changed since then? Yes, a bit. But architectural education is still mostly modernist and there are plenty of examples of students being bullied when they want to design something classical or traditional. Only at a select number of universities, most notably Notre Dame University is it currently possible to follow a fully traditional / classical curriculum.
Prof. Adam's story is just one example of a clash between traditional minded students and modernist institutions, there are many, many more. It happens up to this day. Let us hope that more faculties will start to offer traditional and classical techniques to undergrad students at some point again - at least to offer them the choice to study it, instead of only offering it as part of a Master's course.

Often, contrast is prized or defended by architects, while most people don't appreciate it or even hate the contrast, that seems to tear beautiful urban fabric apart.

Traditional and classical architecture can have a place in today's world, as they are based on solutions that have been time-proven. As a Dutch architect always says (Mieke Bosse): Tradition is nothing more than the sum of successful innovations.

9TFRQVNK1GT8GMBNWhy Building Beautiful Isn’t Too Expensive, With Marjo UotilaThe Aesthetic City2022-12-20 | In this video, Marjo Uotila busts the myth surrounding the construction of beautiful buildings, namely that it is too expensive. There is no clear evidence suggesting this is true. Building ugly buildings doesn't have to be cheap either. This means we can construct more beautiful buildings if we want to; it can be cost effective to do so.
